The Trump administration is rolling out a controversial overhaul of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—one that experts warn could throw more than a million Americans off their health insurance.

In a stunning Friday announcement, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. touted new rules that slash the open enrollment period, target low-income families, limit gender-affirming care, and ban DREAMers—recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program—from getting ACA coverage.

“These are changes that put corporate profits over people’s lives,” said Dr. Maria Jackson, a public health policy analyst. “This will be devastating for working families, LGBTQ+ Americans, and immigrants.”

Cuts Disproportionately Hit the Most Vulnerable

The new rules shorten the time Americans can sign up for Obamacare from eleven weeks to just nine. A critical safety net for the poor—monthly enrollment windows created under President Biden—will be eliminated, making it harder for low-income and part-time workers to access coverage if they lose their jobs or face unexpected hardship.

Perhaps most alarmingly, nearly 700,000 to 1.8 million people are projected to lose their health insurance, according to the administration’s own data.

“These changes will leave millions in limbo,” said Emily Martinez, a Texas mother of two who relies on ACA coverage after her husband was laid off. “People like me could wake up one day and find out we’re uninsured, just because we missed a shortened deadline.”

DREAMers and LGBTQ+ Community Targeted

Trump’s policy also bars DACA recipients from any ACA marketplace coverage. That means hundreds of thousands of young immigrants—many working in frontline jobs—will be shut out of affordable healthcare for the first time in years.

LGBTQ+ advocates say the administration’s move to limit gender-affirming care could spark a mental health crisis. “This isn’t just about insurance. It’s about dignity and safety,” said Dr. Rachel Lin, a pediatrician who serves trans youth.

The Administration’s Justification: ‘Protecting Taxpayer Dollars’

Defending the changes, Secretary Kennedy Jr. claimed the Biden-era expansion of Obamacare led to “waste, fraud, and abuse,” pointing to estimates that five million people may have been “improperly enrolled”—an assertion public health experts call wildly exaggerated.

“With this rule, we’re lowering marketplace premiums, expanding coverage for families, and ensuring that illegal aliens do not receive taxpayer-funded health insurance,” Kennedy said.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz added, “CMS is restoring integrity to ACA Exchanges by cracking down on fraud, protecting American taxpayer dollars, and ensuring coverage is there for those who truly need it.”

Billions in Savings—But at What Cost?

The Trump administration argues these changes will cut premiums by 5 percent and save $12 billion a year. But critics say the cost will be measured in human suffering—Americans skipping doctor’s visits, families forced to pay out of pocket, and lives put at risk.

Some of the most controversial rules, including new $5 monthly premiums and stricter income verification, will expire after 2026. But if Republicans succeed in adding these changes to their proposed Senate budget bill, future presidents may be powerless to undo them.

A Looming Health Crisis?

Healthcare advocates are sounding the alarm. “This is a direct attack on the promise of Obamacare and on America’s most vulnerable,” said Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA). “Congress must fight back before millions lose the care they depend on.”

For families across the country, the message is chillingly clear: the safety net they count on could soon vanish, thanks to new rules from the Trump White House.

  1. Bullshit! Illegals perhaps. Those that do not qualify like migrants, scammers, fraudster’s and fictious medical providers!

    1. If I miss the deadline to pay my insurance I also can lose coverage. I am forced to pay attention. Oh my! I read that only those not qualified will not be covered. One can only hope.

  2. He vowed when running for office that he would not touch Medicare so I hope he leaves it alone.

  3. I believe that this will FINALLY bring stop, or al least, an ending for my tax dollars being wasted on illegals. Others not actually approved and politicians who benefit from lying to us who are required to fund a helping hand.
If the unqualified were to have to pay out of their own pockets, there would be more available for those who truly qualify.

  4. For the most of you , you’re right it’s illegals and lazy able bodied people. Not the elderly. Next gen never tells the trith
