In a tragic scene described as “hell on earth,” a British passenger emerged alive from the twisted wreckage of an Air India flight that crashed into a crowded neighborhood in Ahmedabad, India—leaving more than 200 dead.
The lone known survivor, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was spotted limping through the smoke-choked streets, dazed and bloodied, after the Boeing 787-8 went down in flames just seconds after takeoff.
A Miracle in the Ashes
“There were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran,” Ramesh recalled from his hospital bed, voice trembling. “There were pieces of the plane everywhere. Someone grabbed me, put me in an ambulance, and got me out.”
Authorities say the crash occurred just 30 seconds after Air India flight AI171 departed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft nose-dived into a dense residential zone, slamming into a doctors’ hostel and igniting a fireball visible for miles.
The impact destroyed homes, lit multiple buildings on fire, and killed dozens on the ground in addition to the passengers. Officials confirmed 204 bodies recovered so far—many burned beyond recognition.
Passenger Seat 11A: The Only Exit
Ramesh, seated in 11A near the front of the plane, may have survived due to the angle of the impact. His boarding pass, now making the rounds on social media, has become a chilling symbol of fate.
Local police initially believed no one had survived. Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik later confirmed to reporters, “We thought all souls on board were lost. Then we received reports of a man walking down the street, alive. It was unthinkable.”
The Flight That Never Made It
Flight AI171 was bound for London with 242 people on board, including crew. Just after takeoff at 2:04 p.m. local time, witnesses say they heard a loud explosion and saw the plane dive sharply toward the city’s northwest sector, home to over 5 million people.
“The sky lit up orange and black,” said Niyati Desai, a local resident who watched from her balcony. “I heard screaming. The smell of burning fuel filled the air. I’ll never forget it.”
A Nation in Mourning
India’s aviation ministry has launched a full-scale investigation. Boeing has expressed “deep sorrow” and pledged cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the disaster “one of the darkest days in Indian aviation history” and declared a day of national mourning. Emergency response teams continue working around the clock to recover remains and locate black box data.
But amid the horror, one man walked away.
Ramesh is expected to survive, though physically and emotionally battered. He’s being treated for leg injuries and smoke inhalation.
“I don’t know why I’m still here,” he said quietly. “But I am.”
