Josh Klinghoffer, the former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist and recent Pearl Jam tour member, has struck a deal to avoid jail time after being charged in a fatal pedestrian accident.
The 44-year-old musician appeared in court Tuesday in Alhambra, California, where he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. The plea stems from a tragic crash in March 2024, when Klinghoffer reportedly failed to yield at a crosswalk and hit 47-year-old Israel Sanchez. Sanchez later died from blunt force trauma.
Instead of time behind bars, Klinghoffer was sentenced to one year of informal probation, 60 days of community labor, and a mandatory driver safety course. He will also pay restitution to Sanchez’s family, though the exact amount will be decided later.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere turned emotional when the victim’s daughter, Ashley Sanchez, addressed Klinghoffer directly. Through tears, she described the immense pain her family now lives with daily.
“My father was the heart of our family,” she said. “His meals were more than food—they were love. His death was an avoidable loss that has shattered us.”
Prosecutors warned Klinghoffer in open court that future incidents caused by distracted driving could lead to murder charges. The Sanchez family alleges in a separate lawsuit that Klinghoffer was distracted by his phone and driving a vehicle with no license plates at the time of the accident. They say he didn’t even begin to brake until after striking Sanchez.
While the family’s wrongful death lawsuit moves forward, their push for punitive damages was denied earlier this year for a second time. A judge ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to show Klinghoffer acted with reckless disregard for public safety.
A hearing in the civil case is scheduled for July 1.
