The White House flew into attack mode after a top House Democrat raised fresh questions about President Donald Trump’s health, fueling a political firestorm over his sudden decision to skip a planned Capitol Hill bill signing.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung unleashed a profane tirade at Rep. Ted Lieu of California after the Democratic lawmaker suggested Trump’s last-minute cancellation may have been tied to an undisclosed medical issue.
“Ted Lewd is a dumbass,” Cheung wrote on X. “He probably spent hours laughing to himself, thinking that peddling this lie would be funny. Sadly for Ted, there’s no special new drug to cure being a b—h.”
The explosive outburst only intensified the drama surrounding Trump, 79, as questions swirl about his public appearances, his stamina and a mysterious report involving a high-profile 79-year-old patient who was granted access to an experimental Eli Lilly obesity drug.
Lieu had seized on the speculation after Trump abruptly backed out of what was supposed to be a major bill signing ceremony at the Capitol.
“There was supposed to be a big signing ceremony today in the Capitol, and then all of a sudden, Donald Trump decided he’s not coming to sign the bill,” Lieu said. “Well, why is that? Did he wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Is he unable to stay awake today? What’s causing him to chicken out again? Is it Taco Wednesday, or is it side effects from a drug? We don’t know.”
Lieu did not stop there.
The California congressman argued that Trump’s recent public behavior has become increasingly concerning, pointing to what he described as moments where the president appeared tired or physically unsteady.
“This erratic behavior from the President is very concerning,” Lieu said. “He has trouble staying awake at multiple White House events and cabinet meetings. He has clearly some weakness in one of his arms. He’s got swelling in his hands, and the White House needs to come clean.”
The speculation stems from a Stat News report that revealed one anonymous 79-year-old patient had received access to retatrutide, an experimental Eli Lilly drug being studied for obesity and related conditions. The report said the person was approved through the FDA’s “compassionate use” pathway, which can allow patients with serious or life-threatening conditions to access investigational treatments outside of a clinical trial.
Lieu pressed the White House to say whether Trump was the unnamed patient.
“What we know is his report saying that one person in America got this special new drug was a 79-year-old person who’s very high profile,” Lieu said. “This drug can only be given to someone under the compassionate use provision, meaning you do that if someone basically has a terminal illness.”
“So we need to know, did Donald Trump get this special drug from Eli Lilly, and did he get it under that provision, and, if he did, why is that the case?”
The White House has flatly denied that Trump is the mystery patient. But the administration’s furious response did little to calm the frenzy.
White House spokesman Kush Desai also blasted Stat journalist Lizzy Lawrence, reportedly dismissing her as an “unserious gossip columnist.” But that came after Desai initially declined to say whether the unnamed patient was Trump when contacted by Stat News.
Trump’s health has remained a politically sensitive issue, especially as the 79-year-old president faces renewed scrutiny over his age, weight and visible physical changes. According to reports, Trump has gained 14 pounds since last year and now weighs 238 pounds.
The White House insists the rumor is false. Democrats, however, are demanding more transparency — and Cheung’s profane meltdown has only guaranteed that the questions are not going away anytime soon.
What began as a canceled bill signing has now exploded into a full-blown Washington spectacle, complete with mystery drugs, health rumors, angry denials and a White House communications team swinging back harder than ever.
