The ex-wife of a U.S. diplomat is reportedly on trial in Myanmar after he was found stabbed to death inside a hotel popular with diplomats and foreign visitors.

Thai national Pavinee Supasirivisan is accused of killing Daniel Riva, 43, after he was discovered dead at the Sakura Residence & Hotel in Yangon on May 11, according to The Times.

Riva reportedly suffered stab wounds to the head and neck.

Supasirivisan is also facing a charge of violating Myanmar’s strict immigration code. She appeared for a second hearing in Yangon on Tuesday, June 23, according to the Associated Press, which cited an attorney familiar with the case.

The Sakura Residence & Hotel is located about one mile from the U.S. Embassy and is reportedly known as a place often used by diplomats and visitors.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the death of a diplomat to the Associated Press but did not identify him by name or release additional details.

Because Myanmar is controlled by a military-run government and has strict media laws, the attorney who spoke to the AP did so anonymously.

During Supasirivisan’s most recent court appearance, three prosecution witnesses testified, including immigration officers, according to the attorney.

Supasirivisan had two attorneys with her in court, but it was not immediately clear whether she entered a plea.

If she is convicted of violating Myanmar’s immigration code, she could face anywhere from five months to five years in prison, according to the AP.

If she is found guilty of murdering her ex-husband, she could face the death penalty.

According to The Times, Riva grew up in New York and began his career with the U.S. Embassy before becoming a diplomat focused on international organized crime. His work reportedly took him to countries including Suriname and East Timor.

The shocking case has drawn international attention because of the victim’s diplomatic background, the violent nature of his death and the location of the alleged murder inside a hotel near the U.S. Embassy.

The U.S. State Department has been contacted for comment.
