Nebraska Congressman Mike Flood walked into a town hall Tuesday night expecting tough questions. He left to the sound of boos, accusations of fascism, and a chorus of voters demanding answers about why he voted for a bill he didn’t fully read—one backed by President Donald Trump and described by Republicans as “beautiful.”
It was anything but beautiful for Flood.
“I Didn’t Know That Part Was In There”
The spark came midway through the event in Seward, Nebraska, when a constituent grilled Flood over a shocking section of Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”—a sweeping piece of legislation that would give the executive branch unprecedented power to defy federal court injunctions.
Flood’s response sent the crowd into an uproar.
“I am not going to hide the truth, this provision was unknown to me when I voted for that,” he confessed.
Gasps. Yells. Laughter. Even some in the front row shook their heads in disbelief.
“I told senators I had a problem with it after the fact,” he added, trying to contain the damage. “I believe in the rule of law. I’ve sworn to uphold the Constitution.”
But for many in the room, that wasn’t enough.
“Then Why Vote for It?”
As murmurs turned to shouts, another audience member cut in: “Then why vote for it at all?”
Flood didn’t directly answer.
Instead, he leaned into a vague reassurance: “Federal courts matter. Their rulings matter.”
Constituents Weren’t Having It
The town hall only spiraled from there.
When discussion turned to Republican proposals to cut Medicaid and restrict food stamps through the SNAP program, the room grew tense. One woman stood up, voice trembling with fury.
“You’re selling us out. And for what? A photo op with Trump and Elon Musk?”
Another attendee shouted, “You’re a fascist!”
Flood, visibly shaken, responded: “I get that you can get an applause line when you call me a fascist, but I’m not. I’m an American.”
The room didn’t let up.
Background on the “Big Beautiful Bill”
Trump’s legislative push—officially titled the “National Restoration and Security Act”—has been dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” by the former president himself during recent rallies. Among its most controversial provisions: expanded surveillance powers, loosened limits on federal law enforcement, and the eyebrow-raising ability to override certain court rulings deemed “obstructive to national security.”
Legal experts from both parties have called parts of the bill “dangerously authoritarian.”
“I can’t believe anyone who respects democracy would vote for this,” said retired Nebraska judge Ellen Wright, who attended the town hall. “If you didn’t know what was in it, then you failed your job.”
Not Flood’s First Town Hall Meltdown
This isn’t the first time the congressman has been scorched in public.
In March, Flood faced a barrage of boos in Columbus, Nebraska, after defending Elon Musk and blasting U.S. support for Ukraine, just days after Trump’s tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Flood remains a staunch Trump ally—and that loyalty may be costing him with swing-district voters.
The Fallout
With November fast approaching and Democrats eyeing Nebraska’s 1st congressional district, Tuesday’s town hall may have handed them their next campaign ad.
One attendee summed up the mood bluntly as they left the high school auditorium: “He didn’t read the bill. He doesn’t read the room either.”

r or l are invited. the damn bill affects everyone. when you p
elected officials who can’t be bothered to read the damn bill, you need NEW officials who WILL. never sign off on something w/o knowing what it is. you buy a house or car, you gonna sign w/o reading 1st? they could put anything in there, like 1 day late, we take it. your screwed. so, you always read. they should too. this affects everyone in their districts. and i don’t give a damn if your L or R, your officials are elected by you to do what YOU want. if they don’t know what’s in a bill, how do they know they’re doing what YOU want?
part 2. that’s why they sneak so much into these bills. cuz people get bored & quit reading them all the way. it’s called pork. weird name yes, but PORK. this bill was over 1000 pgs i believe. tough read yes. but still. their job. sometimes the end is more important than the beg. cuz the beg, is all over the place. everybody talks about it. nobody talks about the pork. cuz few get that far. reporters will. they’ll divvy it up between a bunch of ’em, find the horrible stuff & report it. like here. or like this town hall, the people will. GOOD JOB. doesn’t hurt to have lawyers & such involved.
So is it right and proper for judges in one local federal district court to make rulings that affect the national security of the entire United States of America? Or should issues that affect the national security of the entire United States of America be ruled upon by the only court that represents the entire United States of America- the Supreme Court? It is the role of the Supreme Court to be the check and balance on the powers of both the Executive Branch AND the Congress not the role of individual district courts. In fact District Courts were not even part of the constitution!! District Courts were created by the Congress not by the Constitution! The Congress can not set up a watchdog on itself! Nor can they set up a watchdog for the co-equal branches of government/the Supreme Court and the Exrcutive Branch!
Therefore, Congress limiting the reach of the district courts is appropriate because they created them for local matters. National Security should go to the Supreme Court as intended.
Now as to the congressperson not reading the Bill, unfortunately that’s very common because these bills are created by staffers who are lawyers who can’t help themselves but to write a 101 page bill that no one reads and their staff gives them a summary! This is a problem across on both sides.
I will say there are many in the GOP who do not listen to those who voted them in to office but I can not think of even one democrat who lives by his oath, the constitution and cares even a little for those who voted them in. The last democrat I trusted was murdered by his own party. I live in Ma. and their is not one democrat hat is worth even a penny. Obama the Kenyan and his puppet have caused divide in this country that it will most likely never be closed. I took the very same oath they took when I went in to the military, I still stand by and with it, they do not.
