“God did that,” Trump says, claiming divine favor for timing of flag-waving spectacle
President Donald Trump is planning a military spectacle for his 79th birthday—and he says it’ll make the Olympics and World Cup look like amateur hour.
The controversial parade, scheduled for June 14 in the heart of Washington, D.C., is being billed as a tribute to the Army’s 250th anniversary. But critics say the real celebration is for Trump himself—just in time for his birthday and timed perfectly with his political comeback.
“We’re going to have a big, big celebration,” Trump told a crowd at Arlington National Cemetery Monday, shortly after honoring fallen soldiers and blasting Democrats in an unhinged all-caps Truth Social rant. “The 250th anniversary… that blows everything away. Including the World Cup. Including the Olympics.”
Birthday, Flag Day—or Just a Power Play?
While Trump insists the event is about honoring the military and Flag Day, the date happens to fall on his birthday—a detail that hasn’t escaped his critics.
“Let’s not pretend this isn’t a taxpayer-funded birthday party for Donald Trump,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). “He’s using soldiers as props, tanks as toys, and patriotism as a stage for his ego.”
The price tag? A staggering $45 million, according to officials speaking with NBC News—nearly double the cost of Trump’s canceled 2018 Veterans Day parade. That earlier attempt was scrapped after backlash over wasteful spending and political optics. This time, Trump isn’t backing down.
Tanks, Troops, and a Whole Lot of Trump
The June 14th bash is expected to feature thousands of active-duty service members, rows of armored vehicles, flyovers from military jets, and, according to insiders, several “never-before-seen” weapons systems on display.
“We have the greatest missiles in the world,” Trump told NBC earlier this month. “Greatest submarines. Greatest tanks. Greatest everything. And we’re going to celebrate it.”
He then added, “God did that,” referring to what he called the divine timing of his second term falling during this historic moment. “Can you imagine I missed that four years, and now look what I have. I have everything.”
Critics See Authoritarian Theater
Democratic lawmakers and veterans groups are slamming the spectacle as a political stunt with authoritarian undertones.
“This is about projecting power and ego, not honoring the troops,” said retired Lt. Col. Michael Hughes, a former Pentagon adviser. “We already have Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July. We don’t need a one-man military coronation.”
Even some Pentagon officials have reportedly expressed unease over the parade, with concerns about the wear-and-tear on military equipment, disruptions to traffic in D.C., and the growing politicization of the armed forces.
What to Expect on June 14
Despite the backlash, the parade is moving forward. Trump’s team is promising a “once-in-a-lifetime show of American strength” with military bands, skydivers, and special appearances rumored from GOP allies like Sen. J.D. Vance and Speaker Mike Johnson.
Insiders close to the planning say the president will make a grand appearance, possibly riding atop an M1 Abrams tank or standing under a massive American flag backdrop.
“You don’t get many chances to make history,” Trump told supporters Sunday. “This one will be remembered forever.”
But for whom—is the question.
