Federal agents stormed Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in a surprise crackdown Tuesday that left islanders horrified as they watched masked officers rip people from their vehicles in broad daylight. Nearly 40 individuals were arrested during the aggressive immigration sweep, which residents say looked more like a military-style raid than a public safety operation.

Unmarked Cars. Masked Men. Screaming Locals.

From early morning to late afternoon, witnesses described a terrifying scene playing out on the quiet island roads: blacked-out SUVs with government plates, federal agents in tactical gear, and terrified drivers being hauled out of work vans and family cars with no warning.

“They were just pulling people out of their cars like it was a war zone,” said one woman who witnessed multiple arrests near Vineyard Haven. “No sirens, no warning. Just masked men with guns and badges swarming the roads.”

Videos flooded social media showing agents stopping vans on Barnes Road, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, and other major routes, with drivers forced to the pavement and questioned for immigration paperwork. One widely circulated video showed a man being pulled from an L&R Electrical Services van by an FBI agent in tactical gear.

Thiago Alves, the owner of the Rhode Island-based company, confirmed one of his workers was interrogated.

“They questioned my guys like criminals,” Alves said. “He has a green card. They let him go, but they were ready to take him.”

A Dragnet Across the Islands

The coordinated operation was carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with backup from the FBI and DEA. But ICE is offering few details about who was arrested—or why. They confirmed only that among the 40 people detained was an MS-13 gang member and a convicted child sex offender.

Everyone else? Silent.

“They didn’t even tell us how many were arrested on the Vineyard,” said one local official. “We found out on Facebook like everyone else.”

Local police departments were left completely out of the loop. Oak Bluffs Police Chief Jonathan Searle said his officers weren’t notified and had no role in the operation.

“We weren’t involved,” Searle said. “We don’t do immigration. That’s not our jurisdiction.”

Coast Guard Used to Ship Detainees Off-Island

By mid-afternoon, the operation took an even darker turn. Federal agents moved detainees to the Menemsha Coast Guard station, where they were loaded onto a cutter and ferried off the Island like prisoners of war.

A crowd of furious Islanders gathered at the dock, shouting at agents as they moved in and out of the facility.

“You should be ashamed of yourselves!” one woman yelled as a group of armed agents walked past.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Tyler Vanderhaden emerged to calm the crowd.

“We’re just following orders,” he said. “We were told to support the mission.”

Immigrant Families Paralyzed by Fear

The impact was immediate and chilling. Schools began issuing emergency notices. Parents worried about picking up their kids. Some workers refused to leave their homes.

“We’re being hunted,” said one undocumented worker who asked not to be named. “It’s not just criminals they want—it’s all of us.”

Vineyard public schools sent out emails reminding families that ICE does not have free access to students or school records.

Superintendent Richard Smith tried to reassure parents.

“Our top priority is the safety of our students,” he wrote. “We are following strict protocols to protect your privacy and rights.”

ICE’s New Tactics: No Warnings, No Targets—Just Chaos

Immigration attorney and Island resident Rachel Self says she’s seen this strategy before—and it’s only getting worse.

“Under the previous administration, ICE at least claimed to focus on serious criminals,” she said. “Now they’re going after landscapers, electricians, parents dropping off their kids. They’re going after whoever they can grab.”

Self warned residents to stay vigilant and have a plan.

“If you or a loved one is undocumented—know your rights. Be ready. This is the new reality.”

Panic in Paradise

Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, usually idyllic summer retreats, were transformed Tuesday into zones of fear and confusion. As unmarked cars disappeared back onto the ferry and federal agencies went dark, one thing was clear: this was no routine operation.

And for many residents, the images of people being pulled out of vans and hauled away in front of their neighbors will be hard to forget.

“We’re still in shock,” said one woman. “This isn’t who we are. Or at least—I thought it wasn’t.”

  1. To those on the Vineyard. Lets not forget that you believe you are privilaged because you have money. You think ILLEGALS have rights here in America. They do not. They enter illegally or over stay their visa they are breaking the law. You do nothing to help veterans who gave all for this country and its constitution. You should try not being rich democrats. Being such puts you against everything this country stands for.

    1. I thought Martha’s Vineyard immediately deported to other states any ILLEGALS sent there? The rich people there likely reported these ILLEGALS to ICE!
And what happened to Democrats LOVING, even FORCING, MASKS?

  2. Doesn’t this make you wonder what the new world would have been like if ICE had existed when the illegals from Europe first arrived? These are simply fellow humans looking to better their lives. They should be welcomed and given a path to citizenship! This country’s current xenophobia makes me ill, as it should ALL Americans.
Prof. Larry Schlatter (yes, mt Swiss ancestors were welcomed here!)

    1. So you would be completely ok with your neighbor being an MS13 gang member or child sex predator. That is really scary that you actually support allowing an illegal immigrant gang member that is here to kill, rape or otherwise harm American Citizens or an illegal immigrant child sex predator that is perfectly willing to rape and possibly murder your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews or any of the community members children. And you want to allow that scum to stay here and you are offended that they were taken away for YOUR protection. All because you don’t like Donald Trump. Please, go sit in your safe place and wrap yourself in a bubble and stay there.

  3. Anonymous, please do you think these illegals came for free everything or a new way of life? I have watch Americans suffer while illegals have been living hog on my money for over four years. They received my social security and Medicare for my retirement so now what happens to me at end of the year when I was suppose to retire? Are you and the rest of the democrats and rino’s going to pay me back? No I don’t think so. Remember we have laws in the USA no matter who you are or where you come from. Becoming a citizen is a privilege for those who come in legally. Adapt to the American way or leave. Americans have put up with crap for to long and supported to many with our hard earn money for others to abuse taxpayer dollars. I didn’t vote to allow everyone and every country to take my money. You might live high on the hog like the rest of everyone but people like me are the back bone to our country and we don’t like what is happening in our USA. Please feel free to send me your info so I can send my bills for to pay come 2026 so I can recoup my retirement funds from you and your friends. My guess is I will never hear from you, right? So steal my retirement is just ok with all you elites, democrats, illegals, foreign countries and those who rely on our government piggy bank. See you are the problem not solution. So much for Americans living the American dream! Pathetic and downright disgusting. I don’t care how ICE removes them just get them all out.

  4. since they came here illegally they can return peacefully or be TREATED LIKE THE CRIMINALS THEY ARE

  5. Sounds like Germany in the 40; and people that don’t pay there taxes get pardon good place if your rich

  6. Memorial Day weekend is the official start to the summer tourist season for the Cape. (I was born, grew up, spent some adult life in MA.) They probably thought that people from out of country would be visiting during the official tourist season, so went in to “clean up”. I mean, if there had been complaints and such, wouldn’t they have done so earlier, and not now? I find the timing somewhat suspicious.

    1. I meant to add … a lot of the colleges have let out for the summer in the last couple of weeks. Some international students will go to the Cape for their last fling before heading back to their home country. I wonder if they thought they could snag international students under the guise of them being illegal?

  7. I remember not too long ago Marth’s Vineyard residents couldn’t get rid of illegals fast enough. The old NIMBY attitude. So what’s the problem now?

  8. Anyone who finds this appalling please exit my country now and forever. Time to take my country back. Thank you President Trump, Tom Homan, Kristi Noam, Pam Bondi and all the brave Ice and other authorities for making life safer from the corruption in our government. Please hold all who helped bring these criminals and freeloaders here to the USA. Hard working Americans have been back bone of this Country. I demand a refund from democrats and rino’s and anyone else who have not done their jobs in protecting me, my family, community, state, government, judicial system and my benefits as an American.
P.S. I don’t care about your feelings about any DEI or woke agenda. Grow up and stop crying about everything or go to your local store they have baby bottles, diapers and rattles so find a crib.

  9. If they came into this country illegally. I say hunt them down every single one of them and get them the hell out of here. I don’t care what the cost is it will sure as hell be a lot cheaper when they’re gone as when they’re here. We’ve spent trillions of dollars on illegals. It’s time for them go back to wherever the hell they came from

  10. “They were just pulling people out of their cars like it was a war zone,” said one woman who witnessed multiple arrests near Vineyard Haven. “No sirens, no warning. Just masked men with guns and badges swarming the roads.”

Kind of reminiscent of the time chartered jets were sent to the Vineyard with ‘undocumented immigrants’, and were then quite hastily removed by what I believe were national guard troops to “emergency shelters’, and away from the ‘tony’ lifestyles of the Vineyards’ rich and shameless.
