During what was supposed to be a routine diplomatic sit-down with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, President Donald Trump veered off-script—again—this time launching into an unscripted tirade against the Obama Presidential Center.
The Oval Office press availability quickly took a sharp turn as Trump began railing against “woke” culture, bipartisan legislation, and—unexpectedly—the multiyear Obama library project in Chicago.
“He’s building his library in Chicago. It’s a disaster,” Trump said, interrupting a question about U.S.-Canada trade cooperation.
Flanked by Carney and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump grew animated, accusing former President Barack Obama of prioritizing diversity and inclusion over experience and efficiency.
“He said, ‘I only want DEI. I only want woke,’” Trump claimed without evidence. “He didn’t want tough construction workers—he wanted people who never did it before. Now look at it: a total mess. Millions and millions over budget.”
While Carney appeared visibly uncomfortable, Rubio smirked but remained silent as Trump pressed on.
Background on the Obama Presidential Center
The Obama Presidential Center, which broke ground in September 2021, was initially projected to cost $350 million. However, with inflation, pandemic-related delays, and expanded programming, the total cost has soared to over $800 million. The 19.3-acre project, located in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, includes a museum, forum, library, and community gathering spaces.
Despite Trump’s claims of failure, the Obama Foundation has consistently defended the project as transformative for the community.
“Everyone who sees the Obama Presidential Center is blown away by its beauty, scale and the way it will be an economic engine for Chicago,” said Foundation spokesperson Emily Bittner in a statement responding to Trump’s remarks. “We look forward to welcoming all visitors next spring.”
The Foundation says the center will create more than 5,000 jobs and bring in over $3 billion in economic activity over the next decade. It has also committed to contracting at least half of construction work to minority-owned firms.
Delays, Lawsuits—and Misinformation
Construction has indeed faced delays, primarily due to environmental lawsuits and preservationist challenges over its location in historic Jackson Park. A recent lawsuit filed in January by subcontractor II in One accused engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti of racial discrimination—but the Obama Foundation is not a party to that case and has stated it will not impact the project’s timeline.
Still, the setbacks mean the Obama Presidential Center will open at least eight years after Obama left office—marking the longest delay for any modern presidential center.
That hasn’t stopped Trump from weaponizing the delays.
“It’s embarrassing,” he said Tuesday. “I would’ve had it up in two years—under budget and with guys who know how to pour concrete.”
But critics say Trump’s comments reflect more than just his usual bluster—they reveal a continued obsession with his predecessor and a broader disdain for diversity and inclusion initiatives.
A Familiar Target
Obama has long been a foil in Trump’s political narrative. From the birther conspiracy theory to repealing signature Obama-era policies, Trump’s attacks on the 44th president have been a staple of his rhetoric.
Tuesday’s rant, however, was notable for its timing and setting: aired live in the Oval Office with a foreign head of government present, and pivoting from economic discussions to personal grievances.
While the Obama Center continues to rise along the shores of Lake Michigan—delayed but progressing—Trump’s attempt to use it as a symbol of liberal excess may resonate with his base. But for Chicagoans and many Democrats, it remains a point of pride and legacy.
“He can rant all he wants,” one Chicago resident posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We’re building something real here. All he builds is walls.”

My assumption is that you are not a Trump fan, and your assumptions are largely inaccurate. Also , you have broken about a rule on ethics I learned in journalism school.
As one of USA’s Worst Lyingest Presidents ever, Obummer is still screwing things up! And his library in worst part of ChiCongo will prolly have vastly higher maintenance costs than any economic stimulus it’s likely to produce. Plus it’s likely there will be a huge number of crimes and murders there… after it’s built, it will likely have to be torn down and rebuilt in 10 – 20 years… or maybe just forgotten about from lack of continuing overfunding…
yea, trump knows people who do concrete…it’s called the mob. only reason he has what he has, bldg wise now. they aided & abeted him.
Obama! One Big Ass Mistake, America
Obummer out of office for 8+ years and no library… and maybe never at this cost…
Blah, blah, blah……………..
President Trump won forty-four States who all who are not terminally ignorant, recognize as a national mandate. He’s married to a Miss World finalist, is a billionaire and the POTUS. How does your resume compare? Live with it. lol
Really? Do you have proof that he broke the law by doing business with Mafia firms, if not this comment is libelous
As we’ve seen over past 10 years, the Democrats’ MOB has attempted to destroy/murder good Trump at every turn… but failed out of incompetence…
His pathological envy of Obama is so intense and deep within him that he cannot stop himself
President Trump won forty-four States in a national mandate by the voters. He’s married to a Miss World finalist, he’s a billionaire and the POTUS. How does your resume compare?
What prompted Trump’s so called rant? Hmm he with Mark Carney who’s new government is so “woke” they are instituting policies to rant religious centers of worship by their so called “wokeness” and even deny a religious institution their tax exemption if they aren’t woke enough!! And Obama using only minority owned firms instead of choosing firms based on competency is itself Woke and should be bared as reverse discrimination by the civil rights act!! Could that connection have sparked Trump’s comments? I don’t know… do you?
