As America gears up to welcome millions of global soccer fans for two historic tournaments, Vice President JD Vance made headlines Tuesday with a blunt message: “Visit, cheer, and then pack your bags.”

At a high-profile White House briefing on the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations, Vance struck a tone that startled many in the international sports community. Speaking from the East Room beside President Trump, Vance stressed that while the U.S. is “thrilled to host the world,” the hospitality has a clear expiration date.

“We want people to come here and enjoy these incredible matches,” Vance said. “But let me be clear—we also expect our guests to go home when the games are over.”

The warning wasn’t veiled. Gesturing to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who sat a few feet away, Vance quipped, “Otherwise they’ll be having a conversation with Secretary Noem.” The remark drew nervous laughter from the audience, but the policy implications were clear: the administration is tying the international celebration to immigration enforcement.

Two Summers, Two Major Events

The United States will play host to the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup this summer, followed by the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will span across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The two events are expected to attract fans from more than 100 countries, boosting tourism and global attention.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy echoed Vance’s tone, urging tourists to “see America,” but also warning, “Don’t overstay your visas. We will be watching.”

A Trump-Led Task Force—with Familiar Faces

President Trump, ever the showman, praised the tournaments as “the biggest sporting events America’s ever hosted,” adding, “It’s going to be beautiful, and we’re going to do it better than anyone has before.”

To lead the effort, Trump tapped Andrew Giuliani—son of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani—as executive director of the White House’s World Cup Task Force. In a Truth Social post, Trump also named Carlos Cordeiro, a former U.S. Soccer president and current FIFA advisor, as a senior consultant.

Political observers note that the appointments, while heavy on loyalty, are light on sports management experience. But Trump shrugged off critics, joking that “Barron knows more about soccer than anyone at FIFA.”

A Chilling Undercurrent to Global Celebration

While Trump’s playful tone contrasted with Vance’s warning, immigrant rights groups were quick to condemn the administration’s messaging.

“This is the kind of rhetoric that turns international goodwill into suspicion,” said María Torres, a spokesperson for Welcome America, a pro-immigration nonprofit. “You can’t celebrate global unity one minute and threaten deportation the next.”

Progressive lawmakers also voiced concern. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Vance’s remarks “xenophobic and unnecessary,” adding, “America should be rolling out the red carpet for the world—not lecturing them before they even land.”

What This Means for 2026

With matches scheduled across major U.S. cities—including Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and Dallas—local leaders have been gearing up for what could be a tourism boom. But critics fear the federal government’s tone could dampen turnout, or worse, spark travel advisories from other nations.

“This was a chance to showcase America’s best,” said one former State Department official. “Instead, the administration chose to lead with fear.”

Whether the tough talk has a chilling effect remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: in the Trump-Vance era, even the beautiful game isn’t immune to America’s immigration wars.

  1. That is grossly un-American.  This country welcomes immigrants!  We are a nation built by immigrants.  I want to be the first to ask Vance to leave the USA!!!  This is simply pandering to our ender-educated populace who doesn\’t understand that this is a nation built by immigrants.  All immigrants make us a better nation by bringing their homeland with them.  He needs to get the hell out of the USA and go back to wherever his ancestors came from!  We don\’t need un-Americans like him here.  Prof. Schlatter
