A Florida elementary school teacher is under investigation for allegedly writing a deeply disturbing “love letter” to an 11-year-old girl in his fifth-grade classroom—an incident that has shocked parents, outraged local officials, and renewed calls for stronger protections in America’s schools.
Jarrett Williams, a former teacher at BD Gullett Elementary School in Bradenton, abruptly resigned in late April after a two-page handwritten letter surfaced in which he repeatedly declared his love for one of his young students. The letter, reportedly found by the child’s mother, included phrases like, “You know I truly love you,” and encouraged the girl to keep their communication a secret.
According to Manatee County School District records, the girl’s mother, Ann Mitchell, discovered the note in early March and immediately contacted both school officials and law enforcement.
A Valentine’s Day Alone with Her Teacher
In an emotional testimony at a public school board meeting, Mitchell revealed that her daughter had been left alone with Williams for 45 minutes on Valentine’s Day—a day he allegedly used to deliver the letter in private.
“This man took advantage of his position and isolated my daughter from her peers,” Mitchell said, her voice shaking. “She has nightmares. She wakes up crying. He stole a piece of her childhood.”
The letter, obtained by local station WFLA, was filled with deeply inappropriate language, including an apology from Williams for putting “slime all over” the student and making her “upset,” implying that their “fun” went too far.
He signed the letter: “Your favorite teacher, only because I have to be.”
School Officials Scramble Amid Backlash
After the note was reported on March 9, the district quickly removed Williams from the classroom and reassigned him to a non-teaching facility. But critics say that’s not enough.
“Where was the supervision? Where was the system that was supposed to protect our kids?” Mitchell asked during the meeting. “This wasn’t just bad judgment—this was predatory.”
Facing public pressure, the school board accepted Williams’ resignation on April 29, just six weeks after the mother’s initial report. The district says it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Criminal Charges Expected
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its investigation remains active and that Williams could face harassment-related charges. The case has also been referred to the Florida Department of Education, which could revoke his teaching license permanently.
“This type of conduct is not only morally repugnant—it’s illegal,” said a representative for the sheriff’s office. “We’re taking this extremely seriously.”
A Wake-Up Call for Florida Schools
Florida lawmakers have not commented directly on the case, but some education advocates say this incident should serve as a wake-up call.
“We need real safeguards in place,” said Dana Levine, a child welfare advocate based in Tampa. “Teachers should never be alone with students behind closed doors. Period. This is about the safety of our children.”
While the district insists it followed protocol once the allegations surfaced, Mitchell says that’s not enough.
“My daughter is traumatized. The damage is done. This is not just about one teacher—it’s about a system that allowed this to happen.”
The community is demanding answers. And one mother is demanding justice.
