In a move that critics are calling tone-deaf and self-indulgent, Trump is now relying on the defense contractor L3Harris to transform the opulent jet into a temporary presidential aircraft, after years of Boeing delays and cost overruns on a fleet upgrade first promised during his initial term.

Trump’s Gold Standard of Excess

The plane, a Boeing 747 once owned by the Qatari royal family, is being gutted and reimagined into a flying palace. The interior is the work of renowned French design house Alberto Pinto Cabinet, whose past clients include Middle Eastern royalty. Images of the jet show marble-inspired surfaces, gold-coated walls, private sleeping quarters, and high-end conference areas.

“It looks more like a dictator’s playhouse than a presidential command center,” said one former national security official. “It sends the wrong message at the wrong time.”

A Boondoggle in the Skies

Boeing has been under contract since 2018 to deliver two new Air Force One aircraft — officially known as VC-25B — under a $3.9 billion deal Trump personally negotiated. Initially slated for delivery in 2024, the project has since ballooned in cost and now isn’t expected to be finished until 2035, according to recent estimates.

The aging aircraft currently serving the president date back to the George H.W. Bush era and require constant maintenance. But even Trump, who once boasted he would “negotiate better than anyone,” has grown visibly frustrated.

Democrats and government watchdogs have pounced on the news, accusing Trump of prioritizing personal comfort over public service.

“At a time when Americans are struggling with housing, healthcare, and climate disasters, the president is investing in a flying Versailles,” said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.). “It’s obscene.”

Even within military and intelligence circles, there are concerns the improvised jet lacks the hardened security systems typical of a true Air Force One, raising national security questions.

The White House declined to comment on the new plane or on Boeing’s delay. Boeing also refused to answer questions about the ballooning budget or Trump’s alleged threats to cancel the contract. L3Harris confirmed their involvement but offered no further details on the aircraft’s retrofitting.
