In a story that reads more like a Hollywood screenplay than real life, newly uncovered love letters between legendary actor Gene Hackman and his beloved wife Betsy Arakawa paint a picture of devotion, dignity—and a heartbreak that no American should overlook.
The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office has released a trove of handwritten notes found inside the couple’s home following their tragic deaths earlier this year. The letters, full of tenderness and old-fashioned romance, reveal a deep and unwavering bond between the two—one forged over decades and tested by illness, age, and isolation.
One particularly moving note from Hackman, who was suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s, thanked Betsy for making her own birthday dinner while still caring for him. “Love you and the guys, G,” he signed off simply. In another, he referred to her lovingly as his “lovely girl.” It’s the kind of language you don’t hear anymore—because most people today have forgotten what real love looks like.
Despite the cruel grip of his illness, Gene’s humor still shined. In one scribbled message, he joked: “Ho, Ho, I am off to see the Wizard, the Wizz of Achie, Pokie. She stabs me here and stabs me there… But I survive because after I am still alive. (But sometimes just barely).” A heartbreaking but lighthearted nod to the medical struggles he faced in silence.
Betsy, ever the loyal wife, wrote back just as affectionately, keeping him updated on her daily errands and filling their home with the routine warmth of a marriage built on faithfulness and care.
Authorities confirmed the couple’s last voicemail came on February 26—just one day before news of their deaths shook the nation. While the exact dates of death remain uncertain, evidence shows Betsy’s health declined rapidly. Her internet history revealed a desperate attempt to research COVID-like symptoms—dizziness, nosebleeds, and fatigue—before her tragic passing on February 12 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
Gene, already declining mentally and physically, passed just days later from heart disease and complications related to Alzheimer’s.
They were buried together in a quiet private ceremony earlier this month—a final chapter to one of Hollywood’s most under-the-radar, yet deeply American, love stories.
This isn’t just a tale of star-crossed lovers. It’s a sobering reminder that while our politicians bicker and celebrities chase clicks, real heroes—like Gene and Betsy—lived and died with grace, strength, and commitment. Values that used to define this country.
Let’s not forget them.
