A sightseeing helicopter plunged into the Hudson River Saturday afternoon, killing all six people aboard, according to a source familiar with the Associated Press report. The crash, which happened just off the Manhattan shoreline, has reignited questions about air safety and regulatory rollbacks made during the Trump administration.
The New York Fire Department confirmed it received the first emergency call at 3:17 p.m. Rescue divers rushed to the scene within minutes, but the submerged aircraft—flipped upside down in the river—left little hope for survivors.
“It was total chaos,” said eyewitness Maria Gonzalez, a resident of Lower Manhattan who watched the crash unfold from a nearby park. “The helicopter dropped like a stone. Then there was just silence, and then sirens everywhere.”
Video posted to social media showed a grim sight: the red helicopter, nearly swallowed by the water, with only its skids and a sliver of its tail visible. Multiple rescue boats encircled the wreckage as emergency workers fought to reach the victims.
The crash site lies near a long ventilation pier for the Holland Tunnel, a heavily trafficked route connecting Manhattan and New Jersey. Fire trucks and flashing emergency vehicles lined the West Side Highway, drawing crowds of stunned onlookers.
A Deadly Pattern—and Deregulation
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, aviation experts and safety advocates point to a troubling trend.
“We’ve seen a relaxation of flight oversight in recent years, particularly under the Trump administration,” said David Jenkins, a former FAA inspector and whistleblower. “The emphasis shifted toward private industry convenience rather than public safety.”
Trump’s FAA, led by former Delta executive Stephen Dickson, cut several Obama-era regulations meant to bolster helicopter safety and limit non-essential air traffic over dense urban areas. These included more rigorous safety checks and mandatory floatation devices for helicopters flying over water—rules that some charter services lobbied hard to weaken.
“It’s no coincidence that helicopter crashes in New York haven’t declined,” Jenkins added. “We’re flying blind.”
This isn’t the first deadly crash over New York’s rivers. In 2009, a small private plane collided with a tourist helicopter over the Hudson, killing nine. In 2018, five passengers drowned after a helicopter offering “doors-off” photo flights plunged into the East River. In both cases, investigations cited lax oversight and insufficient safety gear.
Tourism Profits vs. Public Safety
The appeal of New York from the sky has driven booming business for tour companies offering aerial views of the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. But critics argue that profit has consistently outweighed safety.
“The skies are crowded. The regulations are thin. It’s a tragedy waiting to happen—again and again,” said Councilwoman Laura Meyers, who has pushed for a ban on non-essential helicopter flights over Manhattan. “How many more people need to die before we take meaningful action?”
As of Saturday evening, the identities of the victims have not been released, pending family notifications.
Federal Response Pending
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to lead the investigation. The White House has yet to release a statement on the incident.

Didn’t Law & Order do an episode about this kind of event, quite a few years back? I forget which version of L&O, however I remember the episode opening with them investigating the crash of a sightseeing helicopter. How odd.
Here we go again. Everything is Trump’s fault! Maybe the pilot was on drugs, or drinking or the copter had mechanical failure? Aren’t those options more likely? I’ve taken those tours and those are private operators not federal sightseeing vehicles ( of which there is no such thing). Again before we draw conclusions let’s get some real hard facts not politically motivated opinions disguised as news!!
Hay Anonimoys; Don’t you know that it is Trump’s faulth for being born..
