Melinda French Gates didn’t need words to express her reaction when told that her ex-husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, named their divorce as his greatest regret—her eye roll said it all.

In a candid interview with Elle, the 60-year-old philanthropist responded to the claim with a touch of incredulity. “You’ve clearly Googled more than I have,” she quipped, before reportedly rolling her eyes.

A Marriage Under Scrutiny

Bill and Melinda tied the knot in 1994, building a life together that included three children and a philanthropic empire. However, after 27 years, their marriage dissolved in 2021 amidst reports of Bill’s ties to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and long-standing allegations of workplace misconduct.

At the time, Melinda acknowledged the deep pain of the split. “Divorces are painful, and it’s not something I would wish on any family,” she told Elle. But she emphasized her resilience, stating, “I knew when I got divorced, I would be okay on my own. And I think that was the most important thing.”

The Epstein Factor

While Bill Gates has repeatedly downplayed his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, Melinda has been outspoken about her disapproval. In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, she admitted that his association with Epstein put a significant strain on their marriage. “I did not like that he had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no. I made that clear to him,” she said. Describing Epstein as “evil personified,” Melinda’s discontent suggests deeper fractures in their relationship long before the public became aware.

A Legacy of Infidelity?

Beyond Epstein, reports of Bill’s workplace affairs cast another shadow. Microsoft’s board investigated his 2000 affair with an employee, which led to his resignation in 2020, though he denied it was related. Further reports emerged about him propositioning employees—an email from 2006 even had him instructing a subordinate to “pretend it never happened” if she felt uncomfortable.

When pressed about these allegations, Melinda has chosen her words carefully. “Those are questions Bill needs to answer,” she told reporters, hinting at more than just one indiscretion. “I believe in forgiveness. I thought we had worked through some of that.”

Life After Divorce

Since their split, both Bill and Melinda have moved on. She is now dating Seattle-based tech mogul Philip Vaughn, while Bill has been in a relationship with Paula Hurd, the widow of former Oracle CEO Mark Hurd. Despite their personal lives taking separate paths, the former couple maintains a working relationship, frequently appearing together at family events for their three children: Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22.

Reflecting on her post-divorce journey, Melinda has remained resolute. “It was the lowest moment in my life,” she admitted, “but ultimately, the healthier choice.”

The Billion-Dollar Fallout

The Gates divorce was one of the most expensive in history, second only to Jeff Bezos’ split with MacKenzie Scott. However, despite the financial settlements, Melinda continues to advocate for women’s rights and global health initiatives, carving out her own legacy independent of the Gates name.

Bill, meanwhile, has continued his philanthropic work, though his past controversies continue to haunt his public image. “The divorce was miserable for me and Melinda for at least two years,” he told The Times earlier this year. “I certainly made mistakes, and I take responsibility.”

Whether his regrets will ever mend their fractured relationship remains an open question. For now, Melinda’s eye-roll might be the most telling response of all.
