BOSTON — Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk took an unmistakable stand against Donald Trump’s ongoing rhetoric about Canada’s sovereignty, subtly altering the lyrics to O Canada before Thursday night’s 4 Nations Face-Off championship game between Canada and the United States.
As she stood at center ice in TD Garden, the Grammy-winning artist sang, “That only us command” instead of the anthem’s traditional “In all of us command.” The quiet but pointed change was a deliberate protest against Trump’s repeated musings about Canada becoming “America’s 51st state.”
The 50-year-old musician later took to Instagram to share an image of the revised lyrics scrawled on her palm, captioning the post: “In this peculiar and consequential moment, we must use our voices. Canada is not for the taking.”
A Moment of Protest Amid Rising Tensions
The anthem modification did not go unnoticed. Boos rang out from the predominantly American crowd, despite a plea from the arena’s public announcer for respect. Some fans jeered throughout the performance, but Kreviazuk remained composed, finishing the anthem with a resolute expression.
“It was a small change, but with a big message,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who later celebrated Canada’s dramatic 3-2 overtime victory on social media. “You can’t take our country—and you can’t take our game.”
The performance came amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Canada, fueled by Trump’s trade threats and his offhanded suggestions that Canada would be “better off” as part of the United States. Earlier that same day, the former president had once again floated the idea on his Truth Social platform, claiming, “A lot of Canadians want this, believe me.”
An Anthem as a Battleground
The lyrical protest was the latest in a series of symbolic gestures pushing back against Trump’s rhetoric. Throughout the 4 Nations tournament, national anthems have become flashpoints for political expression. In Montreal, American players were met with resounding boos when The Star-Spangled Banner played ahead of their games. Those jeers peaked last Saturday when the U.S. defeated Canada 3-1 to earn their place in the final.
By contrast, Canadian fans in Boston received O Canada with only mild disapproval earlier in the week. That changed on Thursday night as Kreviazuk’s deliberate tweak sparked a firestorm of reactions from both sides of the border.
Players Weigh In
On the ice, players acknowledged the added intensity surrounding the championship showdown. Nathan MacKinnon, Canada’s MVP of the tournament, admitted that the political undertones had made the event even more charged.
“There’s a lot of emotion when Canada and the U.S. face off,” MacKinnon said after the game. “With everything happening politically, it just felt like a bigger moment than just hockey.”
Even American goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who skated off in frustration after Canada’s game-winning goal, admitted that the tournament had an undeniable edge. “You could feel it in the crowd, in the locker room—it wasn’t just about the game.”
A Continued Struggle for Identity
For many Canadians, Kreviazuk’s protest tapped into a larger anxiety about national identity in the Trump era. While trade disputes and political spats are nothing new, the former president’s casual remarks about annexing Canada have hit a nerve.
“Canada has fought too long and too hard to maintain its distinct identity,” said political analyst Dr. Elaine Patterson. “This isn’t just about tariffs or diplomacy. It’s about Canadians reminding the world—and themselves—that they are their own nation.”
As the dust settles from Thursday’s game, one thing remains clear: this was more than just a hockey match. It was a moment of defiance, a battle for identity, and, in the case of Chantal Kreviazuk, a reminder that even the smallest lyrical change can carry the weight of a nation.

Sad politics has to get involved in sports. Just let the player play. It’s a game not a war. I remember when Canada had their money frozen and the US stepped up to help them. Would Canada done the same for us. Pffft Nope. Canada would be nothing but a hindrance to our country now that president Trump is making it great again
