Trump Sparks Christian Backlash with Controversial Pastor Pick

President Donald Trump’s latest move to reinforce religious outreach within his administration has ignited a fierce backlash among his evangelical supporters. On Friday, Trump signed an executive order establishing the White House Faith Office, appointing televangelist Paula White-Cain to lead the initiative—a choice that many conservative Christians view as a betrayal.

White-Cain, 58, has been Trump’s longtime spiritual advisor and a central figure in the “prosperity gospel” movement, which teaches that financial success and personal well-being are divine rewards for faith. While she enjoys a large following, many evangelical leaders and Christian conservatives reject her teachings as dangerous distortions of Christianity.

A Divisive Theological Figure

White-Cain’s advocacy of prosperity theology has long been controversial. Critics argue that the doctrine preys on vulnerable believers by linking financial hardships to a lack of faith. “The prosperity gospel turns Christianity into a pay-to-play scheme,” said theologian Dr. Michael Harper. “It’s unbiblical and exploits those who are desperate for hope.”

Trump’s appointment of White-Cain has triggered outrage on social media and within conservative Christian circles.

White-Cain first captured Trump’s attention in 2002 when he saw her television show, Paula White Today. Since then, she has played a pivotal role in his faith-based outreach, even delivering the invocation at his 2017 inauguration. She previously served as a faith advisor during Trump’s first term and led prayers defending him during the 2020 election aftermath, calling on divine intervention against “demonic confederacies” allegedly working against his reelection.

Her appointment now marks a deeper entrenchment of her influence within Trump’s administration. A White House press release hailed White-Cain as a “global leader” who has “ministered in nearly 200 countries, advocating for religious freedom and humanitarian rights.”

However, many evangelicals remain unmoved by the administration’s defense. “This is not about political loyalty; it’s about biblical truth,” said conservative commentator Jon Root. “Paula White is a prosperity preacher, a heretic. And biblically, women should not be pastors.”

Political Fallout and Religious Divide

Trump’s relationship with evangelical Christians has been a cornerstone of his political strategy. While many still support him for his policies on abortion and religious liberties, this latest move has tested their loyalty. “He’s done a lot of good, but this is a line he shouldn’t have crossed,” said Rev.
