In a dramatic House floor exchange on Thursday, Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.), a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, misgendered Rep. Sarah McBride, a pioneering transgender lawmaker from Delaware. As Miller introduced McBride, she mistakenly referred to her as “the gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride.”

But instead of reacting to the slip, McBride seized the moment to launch a scathing critique of the Trump administration’s policies, turning the incident into a pointed political statement.

“Thank you, Madam Speaker,” McBride began, standing as the first openly transgender individual to be elected to Congress. With sharp resolve, she continued, “When I was elected, I promised to work with anyone who would help Delawareans and stand against those who would harm my state. Unfortunately, from day one, the Trump administration has relentlessly targeted working families, cutting funding for first responders, shelters, schools, and healthcare that my constituents rely on.”

McBride’s words struck a chord with many as she highlighted the widespread fear and outrage caused by these budget freezes. “Senior citizens, students, doctors—all of them are scared,” she said. “This is chaos. And the goal? To prove that government can’t work by making it not work.”

The speech, however, was not just a response to the misgendering; it was a direct rebuke of the broader Trump-era policies that McBride has long criticized.

“They’re trying to throw people into uncertainty, to destabilize our communities. But I will keep fighting for them,” she concluded, doubling down on her commitment to represent the people of Delaware and defend the government’s role in serving its citizens.

Later that day, as the 15-second video of the misgendering incident went viral on social media, McBride made her stance clear in a post on X: “There’s an entire speech worth watching. Don’t focus on the misgendering; focus on the issues that matter to real people.”

This exchange came just one day after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) sparked outrage with a hostile anti-trans tirade in the House, culminating in her shouting slurs at the LGBTQ+ community. Following that incident, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chair of the House Oversight Committee, announced he would investigate whether Mace’s behavior violated House rules.

For McBride, such attacks are all too familiar. From the moment she was elected, she became a target for right-wing politicians, including Mace, who led a campaign to ban McBride and other trans women from using women’s restrooms on Capitol Hill. Yet, in every confrontation, McBride has taken the high road. “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms,” she remarked at the time, signaling her focus on policy over partisan culture wars.

McBride’s resilience in the face of adversity continues to make her a beacon of hope for many. Despite the challenges, she remains steadfast in her belief that fighting for the well-being of her constituents is paramount.
