In a sweeping escalation, President Donald Trump has revoked the security clearances of multiple senior officials from the Biden administration, a White House spokesperson confirmed Saturday. The decision follows Trump’s earlier move to strip former President Joe Biden of access to intelligence briefings.
Among those affected are former Secretary of State Antony Blinken and former National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, both of whom played key roles in shaping Biden’s foreign policy. Also included are Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, known for overseeing the Department of Justice’s response to the January 6 Capitol attack, and two high-profile legal figures—New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg—both of whom led legal actions against Trump.
The revocations mark a stark reversal from previous administrations, where former officials often retained limited security access to offer guidance. The White House defended the move, with a senior official stating, “President Trump believes these individuals no longer have a legitimate reason to access classified information. This is about safeguarding national security, nothing more.”
Critics, however, view the decision as politically motivated. James and Bragg, in particular, were instrumental in cases that resulted in legal scrutiny of Trump’s business empire. A spokesperson for James condemned the action, calling it “a blatant act of political retaliation.”
The move is reminiscent of Biden’s 2021 decision to revoke Trump’s security clearance following his impeachment and departure from office. At the time, Biden justified the decision by citing concerns over Trump’s “erratic behavior” and potential misuse of intelligence.
With Trump now returning the favor, questions arise about the precedent being set. Former intelligence officials warn that using security access as a political tool could erode trust in the system. “This isn’t about security—it’s about control,” said a retired CIA officer. “And it’s dangerous.”
As the fallout unfolds, the decision underscores the deepening partisan divide in Washington—one where even intelligence access is no longer immune from political battles.
