In a stark warning about the state of American democracy, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) denounced what he called President Donald Trump’s unprecedented power grab, describing it as the nation’s gravest constitutional crisis since Watergate. His remarks came during a Sunday interview on ABC’s This Week, where he vowed to escalate his political resistance against the president’s agenda.

Murphy’s alarm was raised in response to a fellow Democrat’s suggestion that party leaders should moderate their rhetoric. He pushed back against Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-PA) recent call for restraint, arguing that silence would only embolden those seeking to undermine democratic institutions.

‘This Is a Red Alert Moment’

The Connecticut senator painted a dire picture of the current political landscape, accusing Trump of weaponizing federal resources to consolidate power and intimidate opponents.

“I think this is the most serious constitutional crisis we’ve faced in modern history,” Murphy declared. “The president is actively rewarding his political allies while punishing his opponents. That is the evisceration of democracy.”

He cited Trump’s controversial pardons of January 6 rioters as a prime example, claiming they served as a chilling message to dissenters.

“He is trying to crush his opposition by making them afraid—afraid of losing federal funding, afraid of physical violence,” Murphy asserted. “This is a red alert moment. Our democracy is on the line.”

Clashes Over Government Control

Murphy also took aim at the administration’s handling of federal funds, criticizing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, which has been tasked with slashing government spending. The agency, a cornerstone of Trump’s efforts to restructure the federal government, has faced legal challenges, including a recent court ruling barring it from accessing Treasury Department data.

ABC’s Martha Raddatz pressed Murphy on whether the judicial system was effectively reining in Trump’s initiatives.

“We’re not sure it’s working right now,” Murphy responded. “I’ve received reports from Connecticut that programs like Head Start and community health centers are not receiving the funding they’re due. So, the question remains: Is the administration actually following court orders?”

Breaking with Fellow Democrats

Murphy dismissed the notion that Democrats should scale back their opposition, directly refuting Fetterman’s argument that excessive outcry risks desensitizing the public.

“I’m not going to calm down,” Murphy said emphatically. “Just last weekend, we organized a rally in Connecticut with 800 people on 24 hours’ notice. The urgency is real.”

He warned that history has shown how democracies can collapse when opposition weakens.

“Democracies don’t last forever,” he cautioned. “Those seeking to dismantle democracy rely on silence. They want people to believe the threat isn’t urgent, to fear retaliation, to stay home. That’s how they win.”

With battle lines drawn, Murphy signaled that he and like-minded lawmakers would not retreat quietly. “This is a fight we have to take on—now,” he said, urging bipartisan resistance to what he characterized as an existential threat to the republic.

As the debate intensifies, the question remains: How far will the opposition go to safeguard democracy—and is it enough?

  1. He is correct.  With Trump as president the American experiment in a democracy is likely coming to an end.  His partnership with the unelected Musk will bring that about!  One can always be consoled by the fact that this experiment in a democracy lasted quite a while and had a good run.  Trump and Musk know that and decided they could profit, both financially and with power, by bringing about its demise!  Prof. Larry Schlatter

    1. Obviously the evil lying Democrats fooled you into thinking USA is a short lived “democracy”/Communism… as I mention every day in here and other sites… Fortunately USA is a LONG LIVING REPUBLIC that will go on forever with Trump, Vance, etc. and with the evil Democrats’ Party abolished !!!
