A powerful storm system, possibly spawning a tornado, tore through eastern Tennessee on Thursday night, leaving two dead and three injured. The violent weather caused widespread destruction in Morgan County, particularly in the Deer Lodge and Sunbright areas.
Authorities confirmed Friday morning that a mother and daughter lost their lives when their home was struck by the storm. “This is an absolute tragedy for our community,” said Morgan County Emergency Management Director Tim Wallace. “We are working tirelessly to assess the damage and provide assistance to those in need.”
The storm swept through the region with fierce winds and torrential rain, toppling trees, damaging homes, and downing power lines. Three other residents suffered injuries and were taken to local hospitals, officials said. Their conditions have not been released.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol deployed troopers to the hardest-hit areas to assist residents and survey the extent of the destruction. “Our priority is ensuring everyone’s safety,” said a spokesperson for the patrol. “We urge people to avoid affected areas while crews work to clear debris and restore essential services.”
Morgan County schools announced closures for Friday, citing the storm’s significant damage. “Several buildings sustained structural damage, and road conditions remain hazardous,” the school district stated in an online update. Cleanup efforts are underway, but authorities warn that recovery could take days.
Tennessee has experienced several destructive storms in recent years, with meteorologists noting an increase in severe weather patterns across the region. The National Weather Service is investigating whether a tornado officially touched down in Morgan County.
Residents are urged to stay informed as emergency response teams continue to assess the impact. “We will rebuild,” Wallace said. “But for now, we ask for prayers and support for the families affected.”
