A top engineer in Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has abruptly resigned following revelations that he allegedly operated a social media account promoting racist and eugenicist rhetoric.
Marko Elez, 25, was identified as the DOGE staffer granted high-level clearance to the Treasury’s payment system, which manages Social Security and federal tax distributions. However, a Wall Street Journal investigation linked him to an X account, @nullllptr, known for posts disparaging Indian immigrants and advocating for eugenics-based immigration policies.
Allegations of Racism and Hate Speech
One post from the now-deleted account, dated July 2024, read: “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.” Another post took aim at Indian tech workers in Silicon Valley, stating, “99% of Indian H1Bs will be replaced by slightly smarter LLMs, they’re going back don’t worry guys.”
The account also weighed in on the Israel-Gaza conflict, posting in July: “I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth.”
Federal officials expressed concern over Elez’s clearance to top-secret financial systems while allegedly harboring such extremist views. “It’s deeply troubling that someone with access to our most sensitive databases was also promoting these dangerous ideologies,” a senior Treasury official told [Your News Outlet] under condition of anonymity.
Chaos Inside DOGE
Elez’s departure follows growing scrutiny over DOGE’s role in streamlining federal agencies. The department, led by Musk, has faced backlash for its aggressive restructuring tactics, which some say border on reckless. Reports have surfaced of young DOGE engineers clashing with career government employees, with incidents allegedly escalating to shouting matches and even physical altercations.
Federal employee unions have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, arguing that DOGE has been unlawfully granted access to sensitive government data. According to The Guardian, one lawsuit claims that DOGE has been using artificial intelligence to determine federal budget cuts, including data sourced from the Department of Education.
Political Fallout
The scandal has drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the aisle. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took to X to mock the inexperience of Musk’s hand-picked government disruptors. “Most of them aren’t old enough to rent a car,” she tweeted.
Elez’s resignation adds to the turbulence surrounding DOGE’s rapid implementation of controversial efficiency measures, including proposed overhauls to the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control systems.
