The Eiffel Tower briefly emptied of visitors on Christmas Eve after a fire alarm was triggered by an elevator malfunction. The iconic Paris landmark resumed operations later that afternoon.
At 10:50 a.m. local time, the fire alarm activated following a short circuit on the power rail of an elevator operating between the second floor and the top. According to a statement from SETE, the tower’s management and operating company, the evacuation followed standard safety protocols.
“We prioritized the safety of our visitors and staff. Firefighters were on-site swiftly to assess the situation,” SETE stated. The company confirmed no injuries or significant damage occurred. Elevator maintenance teams are conducting a full investigation to determine the precise cause of the malfunction.
The first and second floors of the tower reopened by early afternoon, allowing visitors to enjoy the attraction’s holiday charm.
The brief evacuation drew attention during the festive season, a peak time for tourism in Paris. Michel Dubois, a tourist from Lyon visiting with his family, described the scene: “The evacuation was calm, but we were worried at first. It’s reassuring to see how organized the staff were.”
This incident comes during a period of revitalization for Parisian landmarks. Just weeks ago, the Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened its doors after extensive repairs following the devastating 2019 fire. The return of the cathedral has drawn millions, reigniting public interest in Paris’s historic sites.
During the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Eiffel Tower featured prominently, adorned with five Olympic rings. The installation stirred controversy, with some Parisians seeing it as a bold symbol of unity, while others viewed it as an unwelcome alteration. Mayor Anne Hidalgo expressed her hope to retain the rings indefinitely, emphasizing their “message of global solidarity.”
For the holidays, the Eiffel Tower remains a top destination, offering breathtaking views from its three levels. The malfunction occurred near the convergence point of the tower’s iconic iron lattice, an area highly sought after for panoramic vistas.
While the incident disrupted a festive morning, it highlights the rigorous safety standards in place at one of the world’s most visited landmarks. “The safety systems worked as intended,” said Jean-Luc Martin, a representative from SETE. “This ensures our visitors can continue to enjoy the Eiffel Tower with peace of mind.”
As investigations continue, the Eiffel Tower stands tall, resilient as ever, welcoming the world to share in its timeless allure.
