The skies over New Jersey have become the center of a chilling mystery, as hundreds of unidentified drones buzz through the night. Videos of strange lights sweeping across the dark sky are flooding social media, sparking fears of surveillance, espionage, and even something more sinister.
Residents are rattled, conspiracy theories are spreading, and officials are scrambling for answers.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas broke his silence on Sunday, attempting to calm the storm. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Mayorkas pointed to a 2023 FAA rule change allowing drones to fly at night as a possible explanation for the sudden surge.
“That could be one reason why we’re seeing more drones now,” Mayorkas said. But his words did little to quell rising fears.
What’s Happening in New Jersey’s Skies?
Reports of drone sightings have exploded in recent weeks, with the FBI fielding over 3,000 tips in just the past month. Most sightings occur after dark, creating an eerie spectacle that has gripped the region.
Videos shared on platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) show strange, hovering lights that residents insist are not planes. “It’s unsettling. They just hang there, watching,” said one resident in Edison, New Jersey.
While some videos have been debunked as regular aircraft, others remain unexplained.
“There’s no question drones are being sighted,” Mayorkas admitted, revealing that over one million drones are registered in the U.S. and thousands fly daily.
Federal Agencies Deny Threat—but Is That Enough?
In a joint statement last week, the FBI and Homeland Security claimed there is “no evidence at this time” linking the drone sightings to foreign adversaries or national security threats. Yet the vague reassurances are doing little to calm suspicions.
“We’ve deployed extra resources and cutting-edge technology to help New Jersey State Police investigate,” Mayorkas said Sunday.
But critics say the government is either hiding something—or doesn’t know what’s happening.
Public Figures Stoke Conspiracy Theories
New Jersey Assemblyman Erik Peterson blasted federal officials, accusing them of doublespeak. “One minute they tell us nothing’s going on. The next, they admit they don’t have a clue. Which is it?” Peterson told CNN.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took it a step further, accusing federal agencies of orchestrating the flights. “The government is behind this,” she posted on X. “They know exactly what’s going on and refuse to tell the American people.”
Even President-elect Donald Trump entered the fray, calling for dramatic action. “Mystery drones all over the country—unacceptable! Shoot them down if needed!” Trump declared on Truth Social.
His fiery remarks have only fueled speculation that the Biden administration is withholding critical information.
A Call for Power and Action
Mayorkas, while defending the federal response, admitted the government’s hands are tied when it comes to neutralizing drones. Under current law, drones can only be shot down over restricted military airspace.
“We need expanded authority to take action against drones in civilian airspace,” he argued, describing the current framework as outdated and ineffective.
High-Tech Systems Deployed as Fear Spreads
In response to the escalating panic, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Sunday that advanced drone detection systems are being deployed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
“These tools will help us uncover the truth behind these sightings,” Hochul vowed.
Aviation expert Dr. Melanie Rogers says the situation is highly unusual. “We’ve seen more drones since the FAA rule change, yes—but nothing like this concentrated activity in New Jersey. It raises serious questions about what’s really going on.”
Residents Left in the Dark
In towns like Newark, residents say fear has taken over. “I won’t let my kids play outside after sunset,” said Lisa Ramirez, a mother of three. “We don’t know who’s behind this or what they want.”
As federal and state agencies scramble to uncover the source of the drones, speculation and distrust continue to grow. Are the lights in the sky harmless—or a sign of something more ominous?
For now, New Jersey’s residents can only watch the skies and wonder: who’s controlling the drones—and why?
This version turns up the intensity by adding a sense of fear, urgency, and mystery. It uses evocative quotes, vivid descriptions, and rhetorical questions to keep readers engaged and on edge.

This idiot has been living for years no one should believe him now. Hi should be tried for his living and jailed for ever.
Drones weighing more half a pound have to be registered with the FAA, and their unique identifier must be on their visible surface. I have yet to see any article about these mystery drones mention checking with that federal agency for local owners.
