In a moment that lit up social media, former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, were photographed with controversial sports broadcaster Thom Brennaman at a college basketball game on Saturday night. The event, held at Moody Coliseum in University Park, Texas, saw Southern Methodist University (SMU) secure a 63-51 victory over Virginia in their ACC opener.

The Bushes, Dallas residents, attended the game as spectators but took a moment courtside to pose with Brennaman, who was working as a commentator for CW Sports. The broadcaster later shared the photo online, captioning it, “Don’t care what your politics are, I’ve known this guy a long time… And he’s a great guy!”

The post immediately ignited controversy, with critics pointing to both Bush’s divisive presidency and Brennaman’s troubled past.

Brennaman’s Fall from Grace

Thom Brennaman, a veteran play-by-play announcer, became a national pariah in 2020 after being caught on a hot mic making a homophobic slur during a Major League Baseball broadcast. While describing Kansas City, he referred to it as “one of the [expletive] capitals of the world.”

The comment, broadcast to millions, led to swift backlash. Brennaman issued a now-infamous on-air apology mid-game, only to awkwardly interrupt himself to call a Reds home run. He was suspended indefinitely by Fox Sports and ultimately left the network. His association with the Cincinnati Reds, a franchise his family had long ties with, also ended.

After a four-year absence, Brennaman was given another chance in 2023, becoming CW Sports’ lead voice for college football and basketball broadcasts. Speaking to The Athletic earlier this year, he expressed gratitude for the network’s faith in him, saying, “There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they’re rolling the dice. They don’t have to do this.”

Backlash Over the Photo

Brennaman’s photo with Bush stirred fresh outrage online. Critics accused him of aligning with a divisive political figure, while others called for forgiveness. The broadcaster defended his actions, posting, “This was meant to be, and stated to be, NON-political. Does everything have to turn into a fight?”

Supporters of Brennaman argue that his return to broadcasting marks a new chapter, while detractors believe his past remarks remain a stain on his career.

As for Bush, his presidency—marked by the Iraq War and the federal response to Hurricane Katrina—continues to polarize Americans nearly 15 years after he left office.

A Polarizing Moment

The photo underscores how figures from politics and sports remain lightning rods for controversy. Whether viewed as a harmless snapshot or a statement, it reflects the enduring scrutiny public figures face in the age of social media.

For many, the question remains: should past mistakes define a person’s future, or is there room for redemption? As one commenter put it, “Does everything need to be a battle, or can we just appreciate the game?”
