In a heartbreaking Thanksgiving tragedy, former Camarillo Mayor Mike Morgan, 77, was killed in a devastating car crash while traveling to visit family. His wife, Donna, remains hospitalized with severe injuries.
The accident occurred on November 26 as the couple drove toward Reno, Nevada, to spend the holiday with their children. Morgan, a towering figure in Camarillo politics for nearly four decades, leaves behind a legacy of leadership and dedication to his community.
News of the fatal crash sent shockwaves through the small Southern California city. Camarillo Mayor Tony Tremblay expressed the city’s grief in an official statement.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that claimed the life of former City Council member and Mayor Mike Morgan,” Tremblay said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Donna, and the entire Morgan family during this difficult time.”
Morgan’s tenure in local government spanned 38 years, including six terms as mayor. First elected in 1980, he was a driving force behind numerous city initiatives and civic improvements. His dedication earned him the respect of colleagues and residents alike.
Kevin Kildee, a longtime councilman and close friend, described Morgan as “larger than life.”
“Mike had Camarillo in his heart,” Kildee said in a statement to the Ventura County Star. “He wasn’t just a politician; he was part of the very fabric of this community. His passion for Camarillo was unmatched, and he leaves a void that will be felt for years to come.”
Kildee, who served alongside Morgan for 22 years, admitted the loss is hard to comprehend.
“We’re all in a state of shock. Losing someone of Mike’s stature is going to take time to process. He was a mentor, a leader, and a friend. Camarillo won’t be the same without him.”
Born in Vernon, Texas, in 1947, Morgan moved to Camarillo in 1961, where he quickly became a fixture in the community. He devoted his life to public service, not only in government but also through his involvement in local nonprofits and church activities.
During his years in office, Morgan championed efforts to enhance public safety, improve infrastructure, and preserve Camarillo’s small-town charm. His vision, he often said, was to make the city “one of the best places in the world to live.”
Even after being unseated in 2018, Morgan remained active in civic life. He was honored with a plaque commemorating his contributions and continued to advocate for the city he loved.
Mayor Tremblay highlighted Morgan’s unwavering commitment to Camarillo.
“Mike’s leadership helped shape this city. His devotion and service will not be forgotten,” Tremblay said. “On behalf of the City Council and staff, we ask everyone to keep the Morgan family in your thoughts and prayers.”
The community has already begun planning a memorial to honor Morgan’s life and contributions. Residents have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the man many affectionately called “Mr. Camarillo.”
As the city grapples with the sudden loss of one of its most influential figures, Morgan’s words from a 2018 interview offer a poignant reminder of his life’s mission:
“When I first joined the council, my goal was simple — to make Camarillo a better place. I hope I’ve done that.”
For many in Camarillo, the answer is clear: Mike Morgan’s legacy will endure, a testament to a life spent in service of others.
