Barack Obama on Daughter Malia’s Choice to Drop Her Famous Last Name for Film Debut: “They’ll Know Who You Are Anyway!”
Former President Barack Obama recently opened up about his daughter Malia’s bold decision to drop her famous last name for her directorial debut, aiming to forge her own path in the film industry without the weight of her well-known heritage. During a candid conversation on the “Pivot” podcast, Obama shared his reaction to 26-year-old Malia choosing to release her film, “The Heart,” under the name “Malia Ann.”
With a blend of fatherly pride and humor, Obama recounted the advice he offered Malia. “Her first film went to Sundance and all these fancy festivals, and she didn’t use ‘Obama’ on the credits,” he said, chuckling. “I was all like, ‘You do know they’ll know who you are.’” Still, he respected her resolve to let her work speak independently of her family’s legacy.
Malia’s film “The Heart” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, marking a significant milestone in her early film career. The film later earned a spot at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, where Malia graced the red carpet in a striking plaid Vivienne Westwood ensemble. Despite her rising profile, she downplayed her connection to Hollywood, admitting, “I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing this designer outfit,” during her appearance at the festival.
Her father, who is known for his pride in his daughters’ accomplishments, emphasized that Malia’s decision aligns with a family philosophy: success should come from hard work, not celebrity status. “Our daughters go out of their way to not try to leverage that,” he explained, mentioning that Malia and her sister Sasha, 23, are adamant about creating their paths without relying on the Obama name.
Barack and Michelle Obama have reportedly encouraged their daughters to pursue their dreams with integrity, though they acknowledge how challenging it can be to refrain from giving a little help along the way. “They’re very sensitive about this stuff. They’re very stubborn about it,” Barack admitted, laughing.
The choice to drop her last name stirred public debate earlier this year, with some critics suggesting Malia’s efforts were in vain, given the inevitable recognition she would receive. Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” came to Malia’s defense. “If she wants to call herself Jeanette MacDonald, she has the right to!” Goldberg passionately declared in February. “If I can be Whoopi Goldberg, she can be whoever the hell she wants to be!”
It seems Malia is determined to follow her father’s footsteps in making a meaningful impact—though on her terms, in her chosen industry. While Barack and Michelle remain supportive in the background, the former president revealed, “The challenge for us is letting them give us any help at all.” As Malia and Sasha continue to navigate life under a magnifying glass, Barack remains one of their biggest supporters, albeit a slightly bemused one.
Malia’s independent approach to her career may just be the beginning of a journey that reshapes expectations for children of public figures.

No one even cares!
This was a made up family to start with, 2 men can’t have kids so she probably went back to her real name.
