In a candid statement on X (formerly Twitter), former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his vote for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying he’s putting country before party.

“I will always be an American before I am a Republican,” Schwarzenegger wrote, expressing deep frustration with both parties.

He continued, “Let me be honest with you: I don’t like either party right now. My Republicans have forgotten the beauty of the free market, driven up deficits, and rejected election results. Democrats aren’t any better at dealing with deficits, and I worry about their local policies hurting our cities with increased crime.”

Schwarzenegger, who governed California from 2003 to 2011 as a Republican but often clashed with his party, shared his struggle with staying politically engaged. “I hate politics more than ever… but I can’t [tune out],” he wrote, adding that challenging election results threatens American values: “To someone like me who talks to people all over the world and still knows America is the shining city on a hill, calling America a trash can for the world is so unpatriotic, it makes me furious.”

Schwarzenegger’s support for Harris and Walz is notable given his role as a former Republican governor. “I also understand that people want to hear from me because I am not just a celebrity, I am a former Republican governor,” he said, explaining his decision to go public with his support.

The former bodybuilder-turned-politician has long been a moderate voice within the GOP. He and Donald Trump share a complex history, shaped by both men’s celebrity and political careers. After Trump’s 2016 election, Schwarzenegger took over The Apprentice but stepped down after one season due to the “baggage” tied to the show. Trump later dismissed Schwarzenegger’s performance as a “bad (pathetic) rating.”

After the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, Schwarzenegger denounced Trump in a powerful video, calling him “the worst president ever” and accusing him of attempting a coup through misinformation. Schwarzenegger underscored this sentiment in his recent post: “A candidate who won’t respect your vote unless it is for him…who will send his followers to storm the Capitol…who thinks Americans who disagree with him are the bigger enemies than China, Russia, or North Korea – that won’t solve our problems.”

He concluded, “It will just be four more years of…division and hate. We need to close the door on this chapter of American history.”
