Mimi Hines, a beloved Canadian comedian and stage actress known for succeeding Barbra Streisand in the Broadway production of Funny Girl, has passed away at 91. Her attorney, Mark Sendroff, confirmed that Hines died of natural causes on October 21 at her home in Las Vegas.
Hines first gained attention in Hollywood through her appearances on The Tonight Show alongside her late husband, Phil Ford. The duo became instant favorites after Hines’ emotional rendition of “Till There Was You” brought host Jack Paar to tears. Their chemistry and charm led to numerous bookings on other late-night shows and top billing at nightclubs across the U.S.
In 1965, Hines achieved one of her career’s defining moments when she replaced Streisand in the original Broadway run of Funny Girl. Hines performed the role for 18 months, earning acclaim for her portrayal of Fanny Brice. Reflecting on the transition, Hines once said, “It was daunting to step into Streisand’s shoes, but I felt a strong connection to the character and gave it everything I had.”
Her Broadway career didn’t stop there. She went on to star in numerous national productions, including I Do! I Do!, Prisoner of Second Avenue, Sugar Babies, Hello, Dolly!, and Anything Goes. Hines became a mainstay in theater, with her comedic timing and powerful vocals setting her apart.
Beyond her stage success, Hines released three studio albums during the 1960s: Mimi Hines Is a Happening, Mimi Hines Sings, and Stars for Defense, recorded with Ford. These albums showcased her versatility as a performer, blending humor with heartfelt musical performances.
Later in her career, Hines appeared in the popular NBC sitcom Frasier in 1999, where she played Mrs. Latimer. She also returned to Broadway, appearing in roles like Miss Lynch in Grease and Hattie Walker in the New York City Center’s production of Follies. Hines’ continued presence on the stage and screen well into her later years earned her the respect of peers and audiences alike.
In a tribute to Hines and Ford’s legacy, the duo was recently honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame. Their star reflects not only their individual achievements but also their celebrated partnership. A ceremony will soon be held to commemorate Mimi Hines’ life, her career, and her enduring bond with Ford.
As one fan recalled, “She had this way of making everyone in the room feel like they were in on the joke. Her warmth and talent will be missed.”
