Alejandro Arcos, the recently sworn-in mayor of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was found dead on Sunday, just six days into his term. His brutal killing adds to the mounting violence in a region long plagued by turf wars between drug cartels.
Unverified images circulating on social media suggest Arcos was decapitated, with his severed head reportedly placed atop a vehicle. While local media corroborated these claims, there has been no official confirmation of the nature of his death.
“His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation,” stated Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado in a message shared on social media.
Arcos’ death comes just days after Francisco Tapia, the new city government’s secretary, was fatally shot. Both young officials were viewed as advocates for progress within their community. Senator Alejandro Moreno expressed his grief, saying, “They were young and honest officials who sought progress for their community.”
The state’s attorney general has opened an investigation into the killings.
Chilpancingo has been the backdrop for violent conflicts between two drug cartels vying for control, with frequent targeted attacks on elected officials. In the lead-up to Mexico’s June 2 elections, at least six political candidates were murdered in Guerrero.
A previous Chilpancingo mayor was removed from office after being filmed meeting with gang leaders. Additionally, in July 2023, the Ardillos gang staged a violent protest demanding the release of two leaders arrested for drug and weapon charges. Demonstrators blocked highways, clashed with security forces, and even used an armored truck to breach the state legislature’s gates. They took 13 hostages, including members of the state police and federal officials, before ultimately releasing them.
In the days leading up to his death, Arcos had been actively involved in overseeing relief efforts following severe flooding caused by Hurricane John.
