Rosie O’Donnell recently expressed hope that her longtime friend Lyle Menendez and his brother Erik could be released from prison within the next 30 days. O’Donnell also shared plans to take Lyle out to a celebratory dinner at Nobu once he’s freed.

The update follows Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s announcement that his office is reviewing new evidence that could potentially lead to a retrial or resentencing for the brothers. This includes a letter written by Erik Menendez to a cousin before the murder, detailing alleged sexual abuse by their father, Jose Menendez. Adding to the mounting evidence are claims by former Menudo member Roy Rosselló, who alleges that Jose Menendez drugged and raped him as a teenager in the 1980s.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, and sentenced to life without parole. But with the recent revelations, O’Donnell is optimistic that justice may finally turn in their favor.

O’Donnell shared that her friendship with Lyle began 30 years ago when he sent her a letter in prison, which she initially ignored at the advice of Barbara Walters. It wasn’t until a 2021 documentary surfaced, highlighting claims of abuse that she decided to support the brothers publicly.

The two have grown close, with O’Donnell describing herself as a “big sister” figure to Lyle. During a prison visit last year, she recalled hugging both brothers, noting how moved she was when Erik whispered his gratitude for her support of Lyle.

Lyle’s impeccable behavior record, which includes volunteering for hospice care for dying inmates and maintaining ten years without a single infraction, has further fueled calls for reconsidering his case. As their next hearing approaches on November 29, O’Donnell believes the Menendez brothers might not have to wait much longer for their freedom.

For O’Donnell and the brothers, the road to redemption may be nearing its end. And if so, Lyle’s long-awaited trip to Nobu might be just around the corner.
