McDonald’s has recently enjoyed a wave of positive press, thanks to its successful summer meal deals that have now extended into fall. However, a disturbing report has surfaced that threatens to tarnish the company’s reputation.

According to recent revelations, a McDonald’s franchisee was involved in a human trafficking ring, with victims subjected to what authorities are describing as “modern slavery.”

The BBC reported that 16 individuals from the Czech Republic were coerced into working in both a McDonald’s and a bread factory that supplied major supermarket chains in the United Kingdom.

The victims, under the control of Czech brothers Ernest and Zdenek Drevenak, were forced into exploitative labor while enduring threats of violence and having their wages stolen.

According to CBS News, police reported that the Drevenak brothers’ gang profited to the tune of nearly $290,000 from just four of the McDonald’s workers. The victims faced appalling living conditions, including being crammed into filthy trailers with inadequate heating and leaking roofs. Many of them also dealt with housing instability, addiction issues, and sexual violence during their exploitation, which lasted from 2015 to 2019.

The victims worked grueling hours in both bread factories located in Hertfordshire and North London, supplying major UK supermarket chains, and at a McDonald’s in Cambridgeshire.

McDonald’s UK Response

In light of these revelations, McDonald’s UK issued a statement asserting that it had “improved systems” to better detect human trafficking within its franchise operations. However, investigations revealed several signs that were missed during the exploitation period, including wages being funneled into bank accounts controlled by the traffickers, victims working excessive hours, and employment forms being filled out by others as victims often didn’t speak English.

In some of the most egregious cases, victims who managed to escape back to the Czech Republic were tracked down by the gang and forcibly trafficked back to the UK, only to be re-enslaved. The stolen wages were then used by the gang to purchase luxury items, including cars and properties.

A Missed Opportunity

The human trafficking operation came to an end in 2019 when one of the victims managed to escape and notify authorities. This led to an investigation by both Czech and British police, ultimately resulting in the arrest of the Drevenak brothers.

Following the findings, Dame Sara Thornton, the former independent anti-slavery commissioner, expressed concerns about how many “red flags” were missed and emphasized that the exploitation could have ended much sooner if companies had acted on warning signs. Detective Sergeant Chris Acourt, who led the investigation, agreed, stating that the exploitation could have been curtailed if authorities had been alerted earlier.

While McDonald’s has promised to learn from this case, the victims’ suffering remains a tragic reminder of the need for greater vigilance in preventing labor exploitation within global supply chains. One of the victims told the BBC, “I thought if I was working for McDonald’s, they would be a little more cautious, that they would notice it.”
