Kim Kardashian, who has become a vocal advocate for prison reform in recent years, is calling for the release of the Menendez brothers, convicted of killing their parents in 1989. Kardashian’s plea highlights claims that the brothers, Lyle and Erik, were victims of long-term emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, and she believes this context was unjustly minimized in their second trial.

Los Angeles prosecutors are now reviewing new evidence, while the case has resurfaced in the public eye due to a Netflix series and an upcoming documentary.

Kardashian penned an essay for NBC News, where she shared her thoughts on the case. “You think you know the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. I certainly thought I did,” she wrote, emphasizing the complex history behind the 1996 conviction that sentenced them to life without parole.

In her essay, Kardashian reflected on how the first trial resulted in a hung jury, but the second one did not allow key abuse claims to be heard. “Their only way out of prison now is death,” Kardashian lamented, noting that their case had been sensationalized and reduced to a tale of “two arrogant, rich kids from Beverly Hills who killed their parents out of greed.”

Kardashian challenges this narrative, focusing on the brothers’ accounts of years of abuse. “Following years of abuse and a real fear for their lives, Erik and Lyle chose what they thought at the time was their only way out,” she wrote, expressing empathy for their situation. Despite acknowledging the gravity of their crime, she argues that they were treated more like “serial killers” than victims of abuse.

Opponents of Kardashian’s view, such as retired forensic specialist Clark Fogg, argue the motive was financial greed. Fogg, who investigated the crime, paints a gruesome picture of the murder scene and remains convinced the brothers’ guilt is beyond doubt.

Still, Kardashian insists the justice system failed them. “Had this crime been committed and trialed today,” she wrote, “I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different.”
