Wife charged with harassing husband during football game

Joanne Healey, 59, was found guilty of harassment after calling her husband Steve repeatedly as he was watching a football game with friends. Steve was watching a Chelsea vs. Manchester United game at a friend’s house in October 2022 when the incident took place. Joanne repeatedly contacted her husband on his mobile, growing enraged each time he didn’t pick up.

Joanne didn’t stop at simply contacting her husband; she also called his friends John and Debbie Ashworth and demanded to know where he was and that he bring the puppy he was watching back home. When Joanne and Mrs. Ashworth, a 30-year friend, fell out over her drinking habits, the situation worsened. Joanne harassed Mrs. Ashworth via texts and social media in the days before the football game; as a result, she had her phone number restricted.

Unfazed, Joanne began making repeated calls to the Ashworths’ landline, making 59 calls in only two hours. She insisted that he bring the family dog with him when he went back home. He stopped answering his phone though since he was too busy enjoying the football game. Joanne then dialed the Ashworths’ landline, which resulted in a string of unfavorable encounters.

Mrs. Ashworth told the police about the harassing phone calls and the drunken abuse she and her husband received. The Ashworths received insults from Joanne, including pedophilia-related charges, which made the precarious position worse.

Joanne pleaded guilty to the charge of harassment in court and acknowledged the offense. Joanne enjoys a drink, but she is not dependent on alcohol, according to her attorney Rebecca Boswell. She said that the alcohol may have been the catalyst for her suppressed feelings to come to the surface during the encounter.

Joanne Healey was given an £80 fine and a 12-month community order at Wirral Magistrates Court for her misdeeds. She is required to participate in 20 days of therapeutic programming with the probation department and pay a victim surcharge and costs of £234. Due to the passing of time and the lack of any new instances after the original incident, the court decided not to issue a restraining order.

The incident serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to maintain emotional restraint in interpersonal interactions, especially when there is conflict. Because harassment can have negative effects, people should seek out healthy solutions to their problems rather than engaging in harmful behavior.
