New parents wearing masks get kicked out of Texas restaurant

A couple were kicked out of a Texas restaurant last week after they refused to take off the masks, which they say they were wearing to protect their newborn immunocompromised baby back home.

Natalie Wester and her husband, Jose, went to Hang Time, a restaurant and bar in the northern Dallas suburb of Rowlett with a few friends on September 11, when they say staff members told them they could not wear their masks indoors.

Wester said she tried to explain how her son is immunocompromised, when a waitress told them that if they had a problem with the policy they could leave – which they did.

Now, the owner of the bar and grill is defending his no-mask policy, calling mask-wearing an ‘overall reaction’ and saying he will continue to enforce the policy in an interview with CBS DFW.

Wester said she and Jose went to the restaurant last Saturday to meet up with a few friends – a rare outing for the couple since their son, Austin, was born four months ago.

‘If you’ve ever been new parents, having those couple of hours out like once or twice a month is so important for your mental health,’ she told the local CBS affiliate.

But when she got there, she posted on Facebook, the hostess asked her and her husband to take their masks off.

‘The music was loud, so I just assumed she wanted to see our faces for our IDs,’ Wester wrote. ‘She again said something about taking the mask off, [but] because I couldn’t hear her very well, I brushed it off.’

Wester and her husband then sat down at a table, ordered some drinks and an appetizer, she said, but about half an hour later, her waitress sits down next to her, saying ‘Our manager told me to come over here because I am nicer than he is – but this is political, and I need you to take your masks off.’

‘She said that the mask “doesn’t work, is like using a chain-link fence to keep out mosquitoes and doesn’t give people enough oxygen,”‘ Wester recounted in her post.

The mom said that when Austin was born they found out he had cystic fibrosis – a genetic disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs.

‘Cystic fibrosis is a very life threatening disorder,’ Wester continued, ‘and if my son were to contract COVID, he would need to be hospitalized.’

So, she said, ‘when my husband and I are out, which is not often, we choose to wear a mask.’

‘I informed my waitress of this information,’ she said, ‘and she told me she could close my check for me if it was an issue.

‘Fine,’ Wester said. ‘My husband and I left without a scene.’a man wearing glasses: ( © Provided by Daily Mail ( a truck is parked on the side of a building: ( © Provided by Daily Mail (

Now, though, the owner, only identified by CBS as ‘Tom,’ is defending his no-mask policy, telling CBS DFW his restaurant is a private business and he has every right to refuse service to a customer.

‘I have spent my money on the business, my blood, sweat and tears in this business, and I don’t want masks in here,’ he said, adding: ‘I feel the overall reaction with masks is ridiculous in the United States right now.’

His restaurant does not have any signs warning customers about the policy, CBS DFW reports, so the hostess tells everyone to take their masks off when they enter.

‘So when they put their masks on the other night, they were reminded that at the front to take it off,’ he said of Wester and her husband. ‘They didn’t want to, and so we asked them to leave.’

Tom said he was unaware they had an immunocompromised baby, but he strongly believes people cannot wear masks in his business – a rule he said he will continue to enforce.

  1. Finally some common sense! This whole mask thing is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! Those paper masks do nothing except make you breathe old air – doesn’t keep anything out!!!

    1. This entire mask thing is stupid and the vaccines don’t help any one only a way too inject people with foreign garbage…………

    2. Edie
Have you read any of the reports in scientific journals that have measured the the efficacy of masks preventing the transmission of respiratory viruses of different sizes? Do you have the knowledge to understand those measurements and what the results mean to mask-wearring during this pandemic? If you have not and do not, your comments are misleading and your beliefs are dangerous to you abnd others. So you believe that those heart transplant patients and those people receiving chemotherapy do not have to protect themselves by wearing a mask in your presence? I am glad that you are not in my friend circle or anywhere else in my life–as a registered nurse, I know how to protect myself and others–you do not.

    3. The mask and vaccine can be a matter or life or death! Wake up people!

Know the real facts, The Trump stupidity is running rampant!

      1. Obviously you do not know the facts. The vaccine does not work. Look at the VAERS report. Once the vaccine was administered, cases rose. The stupidity on the left is rampant!

  2. Another example of intolerance! My way or the highway mentality. No free choice! It doesn’t matter which side is depriving others of free choice, it is wrong!

    1. Yes it is. Both sides want their way. In this case it was not political. My grand nephew is 3 and has cystic fibrosis do l understand where the parents were coming from… Even a cold can cause him to have to have surgery. I don’t wear masks but around him I would if needed… Each person should have freedom of choice.
It really should like this restaurant owner is being kinda blind on this…ignore what people wear(masks). Let it be their option… His business would improve.

  3. Very divided issue some places demand masks others don’t, but it is stupid to turn someone away for wearing one, Some people don’t know the reason for the mask, I heard Don Lemon, an asshole who I can’t stand say he wears his to protect HIMSELF from other’s germs. Any benefit from masks is for OTHERS, not the wearer

  4. Here’s my 2 cents worth personally i don’t think they should have been turned away after all the restaurant is open to the public what should the owner be concerned about the people who want to wear a mask it’s their health not his as I recall before the pandemic i would see people who were wearing masks for whatever reason it’s not my place or anyone else’s as to why someone is wearing one , the other side of the coin is I would have a problem with a restaurant that requires showing a Vax card for the same reason all of this crap is illegal as its the same as having a sign saying no Black’s allowed by law it’s illegal to discriminate anyone can’t people see this is all political? It’s causing division which is what a socialist government wants when people are fighting each other for dumb shit the government is and will continue to take freedoms from you saying it’s necessary to fix the problem they made in the first place

  5. I agree that masks are total bs but I have absolutely no issue with people wearing them if that’s how they feel more comfortable……I think the owner should be more understanding ….although I agree with his overall viewpoint I think its enough to make masks optional at your place of business ….this way people can choose their comfort level …I know he has the right to choose his policy but I think its kind of harsh .True people have the right to eat elsewhere if they don’t like the rules but I wish he was more diplomatic ….I don’t agree with enforcing masks anywhere either but the opposite approach is just as bad …..meet people in the middle and be flexible.

  6. The restaurant should have the no mask policy posted on the door so customers can decide whether or not to enter the place. I can understand wholeheartedly why the parents wanted to wear masks especially because of their child. An exception could have been made but I understand both sides. I’m just glad the parents and their friends just got up with no problems if this had been a blue state it would have been yelling and threatening but then again they have to have to have a passport to get into a restaurant thank goodness Texas doesn’t

  8. Anti maskers and vaccinators are putting other peoples lives at risk…not a political statement, a fact. 90% of people in the hospital today with covid are not vaccinated, this is a fact. It’s terrible when conspiracy theories are accepted before truth. Covid is not going to just disappear someday, we have to collectively work as a United States to get rid of it. Hard for me to imagine that portions of our once great country have deteriorated to such an ignorant level. Man up…..mask up and get vaccinated.

    1. Well said!!! The covid testing sights are ridiculous. When the mask mandate was in effect a few months ago, there was no one in the lines to be tested by June. Our site in our town is testing 400 people a day since the delta variant and no makes wearing/wearers. They say masks don’t help then why do doctors/nurses where them in surgeries?? For a fashion statement? Really? This virus is NEVER going to go away if we don’t all pull together as a country and do the right thing. I can see the not vaccinating (choice, health issues etc.) but wearing a mask has made a big difference in the previous months. If not for yourself then do it for the children that are now catching this variant of the virus. That is why I do…..

  9. I claim bs!!!! This whole story is Garbage. I want to see a video. People in these types of stories are always fast on the draw to video tape their oppressors. Show me this encounter and maybe I’ll believe that this happened.

  10. It’s so strange how ppl bash wearing a mask. What’s the big deal. Why wouldn’t ppl want an added layer of protection. I guess ppl have nothing else to cry about so they cry about wearing a mask. If someone told me to not wear it while inside with other ppl around id feel weird and want to leave. Ignorance is bliss. Id also not be going out during COVID if I have a child at home that has a compromised immune system. Id leave the house for only necessary reasons snd until it was safer to go out and socialize. I’d never forgive myself for bringing it home from date night. Ppl on this site are so negative.
