President Donald Trump raised eyebrows again Friday after repeatedly praising the bodies and physical appearances of powerful men during a campaign rally in Florida, continuing a strange pattern that has even some Republicans questioning his political priorities.

The 80-year-old president was speaking at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers on October 23, hoping to energize Republican voters ahead of the November midterm elections. But between attacks on Democrats and promises of economic prosperity, Trump found time to admire the physiques of several men in his administration.

His first target was Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who joined him onstage to discuss the administration’s health agenda and a proposal involving American seafood.

After Kennedy finished speaking, Trump appeared particularly impressed by something other than his policy proposals.

“Did anybody ever see the build, the body on” Kennedy, Trump asked the crowd before declaring that the 72-year-old health secretary had “the body of a 30-year-old.”

Trump then praised Kennedy’s performance in government and proclaimed him the most important member of the famous Kennedy family, an unmistakable political jab at the family’s Democratic legacy.

But the compliments didn’t stop there.

Minutes later, Trump was recounting conversations he said he had with military generals about the $1,776 bonus payments distributed to service members last year.

Rather than focusing entirely on the payments, the president offered another enthusiastic description of the men involved.

He called the three generals “handsome, big, strong guys” before explaining how impressed he was by their appearance.

“These guys were so good looking,” Trump said, adding that he immediately wanted to make a movie featuring the generals and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The unusual remarks followed another series of appearances in which Trump repeatedly discussed the muscular physique of Republican Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio.

During a North Carolina rally earlier in the week, Trump told supporters he had been studying Husted’s body, including his legs and backside. He also insisted that examining another man’s physique was not something he normally did.

The comments have provided material for late-night comedians, but the reaction hasn’t been limited to Trump’s political opponents.

Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove expressed frustration during an appearance on Brian Kilmeade’s radio show, questioning why the president was spending valuable campaign time discussing a senator’s appearance instead of delivering a focused message to voters.

“It’s just weird,” Rove said, criticizing Trump’s repeated comments about Husted’s backside.

The criticism comes as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress in the November 3 elections, with voters weighing concerns about the economy, the cost of living and the direction of the country.

Friday’s Florida rally was intended to boost Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds and Sen. Ashley Moody, who face Democrats David Jolly and Angie Nixon, respectively.

Trump also used the event to promise $5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress, although delivering such a proposal would require more than a campaign pledge.

For Democrats, the president’s latest remarks offer another example of his tendency to wander away from substantive issues during major political appearances. And with prominent Republicans now publicly questioning his approach, the criticism is no longer coming exclusively from across the aisle.

Whether voters find the comments amusing, uncomfortable or simply another example of Trump’s unpredictable speaking style, his repeated fascination with his allies’ physical appearances is becoming an increasingly noticeable feature of his campaign rallies.
