A night at an NBA basketball game has reportedly cost a Trump administration official her job, just as her career in Washington appeared to be taking off.
Britt McHenry, a former ESPN reporter and Fox News personality who recently joined President Donald Trump’s State Department, resigned Thursday after video surfaced showing her throwing a drink at a spectator during a heated confrontation at a Washington Wizards game.
The timing made the controversy particularly embarrassing. According to Page Six, the 40-year-old had been promoted to a new leadership position on Wednesday, the same day the altercation unfolded. By Thursday, she was reportedly being pushed out of the administration.
McHenry had been appointed to lead external affairs and press operations for Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg’s team. The promotion followed her September arrival at the State Department, where she initially handled communications involving Europe and Africa.
But what should have been a major career milestone quickly turned into a public relations disaster.
The trouble began Wednesday night at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., where the Wizards were playing the Milwaukee Bucks.
Video obtained by TMZ shows McHenry exchanging words with nearby spectators as tensions rise in the stands. Several fans can be heard shouting for her removal while an arena employee attempts to address the situation.
Additional footage shows a drink being thrown in McHenry’s direction before she grabs a cup and hurls its contents back toward the spectators.
As she makes her way out of the seating area, fans erupt in boos. Rather than quietly leaving, McHenry responds by waving, blowing kisses and making an obscene gesture toward the crowd.
However, the confrontation may not have started with McHenry.
Sources close to the former sports reporter claim the dispute began when spectators seated behind her made insulting remarks about model Winnie Harlow, who is engaged to Bucks player Kyle Kuzma. According to those accounts, McHenry intervened and subsequently became the target of offensive comments herself.
Those allegations have not been independently established, and the available videos do not capture the entire encounter.
The fallout was swift. Page Six reported Friday that McHenry had been forced to resign, citing a source familiar with the situation. McHenry separately confirmed to Front Office Sports that she had signed a resignation letter.
The State Department declined to discuss the circumstances, saying it does not comment on internal personnel matters.
For McHenry, the incident also revived memories of an earlier controversy involving her behavior in public.
In 2015, ESPN suspended her for one week after video emerged showing her making disparaging remarks toward a towing company employee. McHenry later apologized, although she also maintained that the widely circulated footage had been heavily edited.
She eventually left ESPN in 2017 and went on to work as a conservative television commentator before joining the Trump administration.
Her latest departure raises uncomfortable questions about professionalism and accountability among political appointees, particularly those entrusted with representing the federal government to the public.
Although the full circumstances of Wednesday’s confrontation remain disputed, the political consequences are already clear. McHenry’s brief tenure at the State Department has ended, and a promotion that should have marked a new chapter in her career has instead been overshadowed by a viral spectacle at a basketball game.
