Former President Bill Clinton took a sharp jab at President Donald Trump’s controversial White House makeover, delivering a joke about the historic Rose Garden that left a Florida crowd laughing and quickly gained attention online.

Speaking at a Democratic campaign event in Hollywood, Florida, on Tuesday, October 20, Clinton made it clear that he was no fan of Trump’s dramatic changes to one of America’s most recognizable landmarks.

“I think Congress made a mistake not protesting turning the Rose Garden into what looks like the entrance to Liberace’s bathroom,” Clinton said, drawing laughter from the audience.

The comparison to Liberace, the late entertainer famous for his extravagant costumes and lavish decorations, was a pointed criticism of Trump’s preference for gold accents and elaborate designs.

Trump transformed the Rose Garden in 2025, replacing its traditional grassy lawn with a white limestone patio resembling the outdoor entertaining area at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The redesigned space, which Trump calls the “Rose Garden Club,” now features tables, umbrellas and bronze statues of prominent American historical figures. The surrounding flower beds remain.

The president has defended the renovation as a practical improvement, arguing that wet grass made outdoor events difficult, particularly for women wearing high heels. Critics, however, have questioned whether such a significant change was appropriate for a historic space that has served generations of presidents.

For Clinton, the Rose Garden carries its own personal history. In July 1994, he welcomed Jordan’s King Hussein and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin there before the two leaders signed the Washington Declaration on the White House South Lawn, a major step toward peace between their countries.

But the Rose Garden was not Clinton’s only target.

The former president also ridiculed Trump’s proposal to construct a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, modeled in part on the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Trump has claimed the monument could serve a national security purpose by accommodating military drones, snipers and ammunition. However, planning documents submitted in October made no mention of those proposed military features, raising additional questions about the project’s ultimate purpose.

The arch is part of a much broader effort by Trump to reshape Washington’s appearance. His administration has also demolished the historic White House East Wing to make way for a ballroom project that Trump has estimated could cost approximately $400 million. The president says the ballroom will provide a much-needed venue for major official events, while preservation advocates have challenged the project’s scale and approval process.

Clinton’s criticism came during a campaign appearance alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who is challenging Republican Byron Donalds in Florida’s November 3 election.

Although his White House joke attracted considerable attention, Clinton also addressed more serious concerns facing Florida residents, including the rising cost of living and the difficulty many families face trying to remain in their communities.

He argued that Florida’s success should be measured not simply by how many newcomers it attracts, but by whether longtime residents can afford to stay.

His remarks highlighted a growing political disagreement over Trump’s ambitious building projects and whether preserving the character of the White House should take priority over one president’s personal vision.

And with his comparison to Liberace, Clinton delivered one of the more memorable criticisms yet of Trump’s efforts to leave his mark on the nation’s most famous residence.
