For nearly eight years, Meghan Markle has faced relentless criticism over her bitter estrangement from her father. Now, a startling revelation involving serious allegations and a police investigation is casting the family feud in an entirely different light.
The Duchess of Sussex, 45, broke her silence Friday, October 23, revealing that she had been warned years ago about disturbing allegations involving her father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82. She says those concerns explain why he has never been allowed to meet her two children with Prince Harry.
The revelation came as authorities in the Philippines confirmed they were investigating allegations that Thomas possessed child sexual abuse material at his former home in Cebu.
According to British newspaper The Sun, Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., contacted authorities after allegedly discovering illegal images among their father’s belongings. He reportedly alerted investigators in the Philippines and the United States.
Thomas Sr. has strongly denied the accusations, calling them “sick lies” and insisting he could never commit the acts being alleged. No criminal charges have been announced.
But Meghan’s response introduced another unexpected twist.
In a statement released Friday, the former actress said she had received a letter through British authorities containing troubling allegations against her father following her 2018 wedding.
She explained that she had been assured the accusations were being investigated and had remained publicly silent while facing years of criticism over their fractured relationship.
Meghan said her decision to distance herself from her father and prevent contact with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, was motivated by “one reason: to protect them.”
The controversy deepened Saturday when London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed receiving a letter in January 2019 containing allegations of possible criminal conduct outside the United Kingdom.
Police acknowledged that the information had been passed to Harry and Meghan’s office but had not been shared with other law enforcement agencies. The department is now reviewing how the matter was handled and whether its actions warrant scrutiny by an independent police watchdog.
Although Meghan initially placed the warning in 2018, a spokesperson for the Sussexes acknowledged that the police records should be considered the accurate timeline.
The dramatic developments add a new dimension to one of the royal family’s most publicized personal disputes.
Meghan and her father fell out around her May 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle, which he missed following a controversy over staged paparazzi photographs and reported health problems.
In the years that followed, Thomas repeatedly gave interviews expressing his hurt over the estrangement and pleading for reconciliation. Their relationship deteriorated further after portions of a private letter Meghan had written him were published by a British newspaper, leading to a legal battle that she ultimately won.
Despite the bitter history, Meghan reportedly attempted to contact her father in December 2025 after learning he had undergone a leg amputation.
The latest allegations have now brought renewed attention to the family’s troubled past. The FBI has confirmed it is aware of the accusations and could assist Philippine authorities, while also examining whether any related violations of U.S. law occurred.
Meghan said she was deeply distressed by the reports and expressed concern for any children who may have been harmed.
The allegations remain under investigation, and Thomas has denied wrongdoing. The earlier police letter does not establish the truth of the current accusations.
For Meghan, however, the developments have brought a deeply personal decision back into the spotlight. After years of being criticized for keeping her father at a distance, she is now publicly explaining why she believed protecting her children had to come first.
