A Saturday afternoon youth soccer game in Kansas turned deadly when a vehicle drove onto the field, killing a child and an adult and injuring several others as families gathered at a popular Wichita sports complex.

The incident unfolded on October 17 at Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita, prompting a massive emergency response as police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to help those caught in the vehicle’s path.

Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses confirmed that two people had died, including one child and one adult. Several others were injured, although authorities had not released an exact number or details about their conditions.

Police also confirmed that the driver was taken into custody. Two juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, according to Moses.

Witnesses described a frightening scene as a black pickup truck suddenly drove across the youth soccer fields, striking multiple people before coming to a stop farther down the complex.

One witness told local television station KWCH that the truck traveled an estimated 100 to 200 yards across the fields before stopping. Dozens of emergency responders descended on the area, with medical personnel providing urgent assistance to victims.

The Wichita Police Department initially reported injuries near 2999 N. Greenwich Road before confirming that officers were investigating what they described as a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle.

“There is no further ongoing threat at this time,” the department said in a public statement.

The tragedy unfolded at one of Wichita’s major recreational soccer facilities. Stryker Sports Complex features 11 lighted outdoor turf fields and hosts youth leagues, tournaments and other sporting events throughout the year.

The sprawling facility regularly brings together young athletes, coaches, parents and spectators, making Saturday’s incident particularly devastating for those attending the games.

Authorities have not publicly explained what caused the vehicle to enter the playing area or whether the driver’s actions were intentional. The driver’s identity and any potential criminal charges had not been announced.

Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the vehicle reached the fields and the events immediately preceding the deaths.

The identities of the two people killed have not been released. Officials also have not provided the ages or identities of the other victims.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area around North Greenwich Road and East 29th Street while emergency operations and the investigation continued.

Additional details are expected as Wichita police continue their investigation into the deadly incident.
