A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at an Oregon elementary school Thursday afternoon, killing three young children and a teacher before an armed bystander followed the attacker into the building and fatally shot him, authorities said.
The horrifying attack unfolded October 15 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, where students as young as kindergarten age were attending classes when gunfire erupted.
The children killed were just 5, 8 and 11 years old. Another 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.
Now, investigators are trying to determine what drove a teenager to carry out the deadly attack and how he obtained the weapon.
According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m. from someone sitting inside a vehicle outside the school.
The caller reported that a person armed with a long gun was firing toward the vehicle.
Moments later, additional 911 calls began pouring in as the suspect forced his way into the elementary school by shooting through locked entrance doors.
Once inside, the teenager opened fire.
The school immediately went into lockdown as teachers and staff worked to protect students while police raced toward the building.
But before officers could confront the attacker, a civilian who had witnessed the situation took action.
Police said the individual saw the armed teenager enter the school, followed him inside and shot him.
The suspect was found dead inside the building shortly after officers arrived.
Authorities have not publicly identified the armed bystander or explained the full circumstances of the confrontation.
At a news conference Thursday evening, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the person who intervened, acknowledging both the courage involved and the emotional burden of confronting a deadly school shooting.
The governor said her heart was broken for the families whose lives had been permanently changed.
Police officers arrived at the school around 1:02 p.m., approximately three minutes after the initial emergency call.
By then, the violence had claimed the lives of three students and a teacher.
Emergency responders rushed the two surviving victims to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, where they were listed in critical condition.
Officials have not released the names of the victims while relatives are being notified.
The suspected shooter was identified only as a 16-year-old boy from Bend.
Investigators have not confirmed whether he attended Silver Rail Elementary in the past, knew anyone at the school or had a particular reason for targeting the building.
According to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, the teenager used a pump-action shotgun that had been purchased by his mother.
Authorities have not publicly explained how he obtained access to the firearm or whether anyone else may face charges.
Those questions remain central to the investigation.
As police secured the building, frightened parents rushed to find their children.
Students were transported by bus to Journey Church, where officials established a family reunification center.
Emotional scenes unfolded as parents embraced their children, some of whom carried stuffed animals and other belongings from school.
For families whose loved ones did not survive, the afternoon ended in unimaginable heartbreak.
Silver Rail Elementary serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade in a residential neighborhood on the eastern side of Bend.
The school had approximately 459 students enrolled during the previous academic year.
The ordinarily quiet community, known for its outdoor recreation and proximity to the Cascade Mountains, was left stunned by the violence.
One nearby resident told Oregon Public Broadcasting that she initially heard several loud noises before realizing they were gunshots.
She then heard a neighbor screaming and emergency sirens approaching the school.
The attack has also left school employees and first responders confronting the emotional aftermath of a tragedy involving very young children.
Bend-La Pine Schools announced that all classes, athletic events and extracurricular activities across the district would be canceled Friday, October 16.
The closure affects all 32 schools as officials provide time for students, families and employees to grieve.
Later Thursday evening, hundreds of community members gathered at Bend’s Drake Park for a candlelight vigil.
Residents stood together in prayer, sang hymns and remembered those who had been killed.
The gathering offered a place for families and neighbors to support one another as the community struggled to process what had happened.
The shooting has also renewed national attention on school security and firearm access.
Investigators say the teenager managed to enter the building despite locked doors, illustrating the challenges schools face when an armed attacker attempts to force entry.
The quick intervention by an armed civilian stopped the suspected gunman, but authorities have not established whether the attacker intended to harm additional people.
Police are examining evidence from the school, reviewing witness accounts and working to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are assisting local authorities.
As of Friday morning, October 16, investigators had not publicly identified a motive.
According to an Associated Press and USA Today database maintained with Northeastern University, the shooting marked the 28th mass killing in the United States in 2026.
For the families of Silver Rail Elementary, however, the tragedy is far more than another statistic.
Three children and a teacher went to school Thursday expecting an ordinary day. They never returned home.
And as investigators search for answers, a grieving Oregon community is left confronting the devastating loss of four innocent lives.
