Atlanta motorists were stunned late Sunday night after spotting a pair of feet dangling from a wrecked SUV that had become lodged beneath an overpass following a dramatic crash.
According to an Atlanta Police Department incident report, a 21-year-old man was driving a Mercedes-Benz GLC on the I-20 East ramp from the I-75/I-85 Atlanta Connector when he lost control of the vehicle.
Police said the SUV struck a median, causing it to flip over the median rail and off the bridge.
From the roadway below, witnesses could see the Mercedes lying on its side with the airbags deployed. Even more alarming, two feet could be seen sticking out of what appeared to be the passenger-side window.
Despite the frightening scene, police said the driver was safely removed from the vehicle. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Authorities did not release details about the extent of his injuries.
Removing the wrecked SUV was no simple task. Crews eventually brought in a crane to lift the vehicle from where it had become lodged.
The bizarre crash brought traffic to a halt and quickly attracted a crowd of drivers, many of whom began sharing photos and videos of the scene on social media.
Travelers Kalena Boykin and Michael Cunningham Jr. told WSB-TV they initially thought the backup might have been caused by construction.
“At first we just saw a lot of traffic, like what’s going on, construction?” Boykin said. “We look up, we see feet.”
Atlanta Police have not released additional information about what caused the driver to lose control or whether any charges are expected.
The startling image of the dangling feet quickly became the defining sight of the crash, but fortunately, the driver was pulled from the wreck alive.
