Humpback Whale Sinks U.S. Family’s Sailboat in Wild Attack (Video)

A family’s peaceful sailing trip through Alaska turned into a nightmare when a massive humpback whale slammed into their sailboat, tearing a huge hole in the vessel and sending them scrambling into the freezing water.

Tania Lewis said she and her family were sailing through Glacier Bay on July 29 when the frightening encounter unfolded around 11:30 p.m.

Lewis and her husband had already fallen asleep after spending the day on the water, while their son Lou was still awake reading.

Then everything changed in an instant.

“We heard a giant thud,” Lewis told Alaska’s News Source. “And then the boat just sank.”

Lou quickly alerted his parents that the sailboat was going down, but the family had virtually no time to react.

Their emergency bag, packed with survival supplies, was still inside the cabin and became impossible to retrieve as the vessel rapidly filled with water.

Their emergency dinghy wasn’t much help at first either.

The small boat had flipped upside down and filled with water, forcing Lewis and her husband to struggle with it as their sailboat disappeared beneath them.

“It was full of water, and it took us a little while to navigate that and finally accidentally flip the dinghy, in which case then we could turn it back over,” Lewis recalled.

Lewis and her husband were eventually able to climb into the dinghy and make their way toward shore.

Their son faced an even more frightening escape.

Lou reportedly swam roughly 130 yards to land while using a backpack as an improvised flotation device.

Making it to shore, however, was only the beginning of the family’s ordeal.

Because their boat sank so quickly, they had been unable to grab most of the clothing and emergency supplies they normally would have taken with them.

“Normally, if we had time — and just even like a couple more minutes — we could have been really comfortable on the beach there,” Lewis said. “But as it was, we had very limited extra clothes and enough emergency equipment to make a fire.”

The stranded family spent the rest of the night huddled near a fire as they waited in the Alaskan wilderness for help.

Rescue crews were finally able to reach them around 6:30 a.m. the following morning.

When crews later located the damaged sailboat, they discovered a massive hole in the keel — evidence of just how powerful the collision had been.

Lewis said she later spoke with a park biologist who believed the humpback whale may have accidentally struck the boat while chasing fish.

The incident highlights both the extraordinary power of humpback whales and the unpredictable nature of encountering wildlife in protected places like Glacier Bay, where people and some of the planet’s largest marine mammals share the same waters.

Remarkably, Lewis said the family refused to let the terrifying accident completely ruin their experience.

After surviving the sinking and spending hours stranded along the shoreline, they found something unexpectedly beautiful in the chaos.

“We had a really magical night with the moon,” Lewis said, explaining that the full moon eventually rose above them.

“And when else do you get to sit around the fire with your family all night?”

For the Lewis family, what started as a relaxing Alaska sailing adventure became a survival story they’re unlikely to ever forget — one involving a humpback whale, a sinking boat and a desperate midnight swim to shore.
