Trump, 80, Hiy by Brutal New Poll

President Donald Trump spent years branding Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe,” but a new poll suggests the nickname may now be boomeranging back toward the White House.

A stunning Strength in Numbers survey found that 46 percent of Americans rated Trump’s mental sharpness as “poor,” raising fresh questions about how voters view the 80-year-old president’s fitness, stamina and command of the job.

The poll, conducted July 14 through July 17 among 1,514 U.S. adults, landed at a particularly awkward moment for Trump and his team. The president has long insisted he is energetic, sharp and fully in control, while his allies have repeatedly tried to draw a sharp contrast between Trump and former President Joe Biden.

But the numbers tell a messier story.

Biden, whose age and mental fitness became a defining issue during the 2024 campaign, received similarly grim marks in the same survey, with 50 percent of Americans rating his mental fitness as “poor.” Trump still performed better than Biden in positive ratings, with 38 percent calling his mental fitness “excellent” or “good,” compared with 24 percent for Biden.

Still, for a president who turned Biden’s age into a political weapon, the poll is a warning flare.

The results cut directly against the rosy portrait painted by the White House. Spokesman Davis Ingle told the Daily Beast that Trump is “the sharpest and most accessible President in American history,” arguing that Trump’s “unmatched energy” stands in stark contrast to what he described as Biden’s decline.

Ingle also accused Democrats and the media of covering up concerns about Biden’s mental and physical condition during the last administration.

But Trump is now facing the same kind of scrutiny he once gleefully aimed at his predecessor. Americans have watched as questions pile up about his physical appearance, late-night posting habits, visible bruising and swollen-looking ankles, along with reports and viral moments that have fueled chatter about whether the presidency is wearing on him.

The White House insists Trump is working nonstop and delivering on his promises. Yet the poll suggests many voters are not buying the image of a tireless commander in chief.

And the concerns do not stop with his age.

The same survey showed Trump deep underwater on pocketbook issues, with his net approval on prices and inflation sitting at a brutal negative 42. Only 8 percent of Americans said things in the country were “going well,” an especially damaging number for a president who built his political brand around strength, confidence and national comeback.

Gas prices are another sore spot. According to the poll, 51 percent of respondents blamed Trump and his administration for current gas prices, a sign that voters may be holding him directly responsible for economic pain at the pump.

For Trump, the political danger is obvious. His comeback campaign leaned heavily on the idea that Biden was too old, too weak and too diminished to lead. Now, with Trump himself occupying the Oval Office at 80, voters appear increasingly willing to ask the same uncomfortable questions about him.

The poll does not prove anything about Trump’s health. But politically, perception can be just as damaging.

And for a president who once mocked his rival as sleepy, confused and past his prime, the new numbers suggest Americans may be starting to wonder whether Trump has wandered into the very territory he spent years ridiculing.
