President Donald Trump’s splashy patriotic state fair on the National Mall was meant to be a grand celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Instead, one of the most talked-about attractions turned out to be a cow named Melania.

The unusual tribute to First Lady Melania Trump appeared at the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., where Future Farmers of America students showed off livestock as part of the White House-backed event.

The calf’s name quickly raised eyebrows.

According to The Washington Post, FFA student Piper Stolipher said the students were trying to come up with patriotic names tied to the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebration when they landed on “Melania.”

“We thought Melania would be a good idea because it’s the first lady’s name, and the hair colors kind of match,” Stolipher said. “And it just fit.”

The moment added another bizarre twist to an already headline-grabbing event, which has been promoted by the Trump administration as a massive America250 celebration but has also drawn criticism for looking more like a political showcase than a nonpartisan national birthday party.

The fair features a towering 110-foot Freedom 250 Ferris wheel, livestock displays, patriotic exhibits and a plywood “Triumph Arch” inspired by a monument Trump has previously floated for an area near Arlington National Cemetery.

But for all the grand staging, the crowds reportedly did not match the hype.

The Daily Beast reported that when it visited the fair during the late afternoon and early evening, the lawns looked noticeably empty, with little sign of the after-work and after-school rush organizers may have hoped for.

The underwhelming turnout only fueled more questions about the event, which has already faced resistance from several states. Some reportedly declined to take part because of taxpayer costs, difficulty finding sponsors or concerns that the celebration had become too closely tied to Trump’s political brand.

Those concerns intensified after Trump launched the festivities earlier in the week with a MAGA-style rally, further blurring the line between a national commemoration and a campaign-flavored spectacle.

The Great American State Fair was born after months of tension between the White House and the congressionally chartered America250 commission, which had been planning the country’s anniversary events for years before Trump’s team rolled out its own vision.

Now, instead of the Ferris wheel, the arch or the patriotic displays dominating the conversation, one livestock project has become the unlikely symbol of the whole affair.

A calf named Melania may not have been the tribute the first lady expected.

But at Trump’s state fair, it may be the one people remember most.
