Nearly three years after Ivana Trump was found dead at the bottom of a staircase inside her New York City townhouse, her son Eric Trump has revealed the chilling final words she said to him before her sudden death.
Ivana, Donald Trump’s first wife and the mother of Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric, died on July 14, 2022, at age 73. Her death stunned the Trump family and immediately drew national attention, not only because of her famous last name, but because of the tragic circumstances surrounding her final moments.
According to Eric, he spoke with his mother the night before she died. During that conversation, Ivana reportedly told him she wanted to live to be 120 years old.
Then came the five words that would later feel almost impossible to forget.
“Only the good die young,” she told him, according to reports.
Eric shared the eerie exchange during his eulogy for his mother, turning what may have been an ordinary family conversation into a deeply haunting memory.
The next day, paramedics were called to Ivana’s Upper East Side home around 12:40 p.m. after receiving a report of cardiac arrest. When first responders arrived, they found her at the bottom of the stairs inside her residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New York City Medical Examiner later determined that Ivana died from blunt impact injuries to her torso. Her death was ruled accidental.
Ivana had lived for decades in the spotlight. Born in Czechoslovakia, she became a model, skier, socialite and businesswoman before marrying Donald Trump in 1977. The couple became one of New York’s most recognizable power pairs during the flashy 1980s, building a brand around wealth, glamour and ambition.
Their marriage ended in a messy and very public divorce in 1992 after Trump’s affair with Marla Maples became tabloid fuel.
Still, Ivana remained a central figure in the Trump family story. She raised Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric, and her children later credited her with teaching them discipline, toughness and drive.
After her death, Donald Trump posted a tribute to his ex-wife, calling her “a wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman” who had lived “a great and inspirational life.”
“Her pride and joy were her three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric,” he wrote at the time. “She was so proud of them, as we were all so proud of her. Rest In Peace, Ivana.”
Her children also released a statement honoring their mother as “an incredible woman” and “a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty, and caring mother and friend.”
“Ivana Trump was a survivor,” they said. “She fled from communism and embraced this country. She taught her children about grit and toughness, compassion and determination.”
But in true Trump-family fashion, even years after Ivana’s death, the family’s internal dynamics continue to fuel public fascination.
Eric has sometimes been described in media circles as the “forgotten” Trump child, overshadowed by Ivanka’s White House role and Donald Jr.’s louder political presence. Yet recent attention has shifted to whether Don Jr. is now the one being pushed out of the spotlight.
A Father’s Day message from the Trump Organization praised Eric in glowing terms, calling him the son who “showed up, every single day” and describing him as the “keeper” and “engine” of his father’s legacy. The message appeared to leave out Don Jr., despite his role as executive vice president of the Trump Organization.
The apparent snub raised eyebrows, especially after reports that Donald Trump skipped Don Jr.’s late-May wedding to Bettina Anderson, citing the conflict with Iran.
For a family that has spent decades turning loyalty, legacy and public image into political theater, even a holiday message can become a headline.
But behind the family drama, Ivana’s final words remain the most startling detail.
A woman who said she wanted to live to 120 was dead the next day. And the last message her son remembered hearing from her was a phrase that now reads like a warning from the edge of tragedy.
“Only the good die young.”
