Bob Packwood, the once-mighty Oregon Republican who spent decades in the U.S. Senate before his career was destroyed by a shocking sexual misconduct scandal, has died at 93.

Packwood died June 6 at a residential care facility in Southern California, where he and his wife had been renting a vacation home, according to a family friend. His family later released an obituary confirming his death.

His wife, Elaine Franklin, announced the news in a statement from a private Facebook post that was also provided to OPB.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news that Senator Packwood passed away earlier today,” Franklin said. “He touched many lives and leaves behind a lasting legacy of public service. He will be deeply missed.”

For years, Packwood was one of the most powerful Republican figures in Washington. He arrived in national politics young, rose through the ranks, and became a major player in the Senate. In Oregon, he built a reputation as a moderate Republican who was willing to defy the party’s hard-liners.

He supported abortion rights, backed women’s rights, and helped secure landmark federal protections for the Columbia River Gorge. In a Republican Party increasingly dominated by conservative culture-war politics, Packwood stood out as a politician from a different era.

But that carefully polished image came crashing down in spectacular fashion.

In late 1992, shortly after voters sent him back to Washington for a fifth Senate term, The Washington Post published a devastating investigation that detailed allegations from former female staffers and others. They accused Packwood of a yearslong pattern of sexual misconduct, including forceful kissing.

The accusations ignited a political firestorm.

Suddenly, the senator who had publicly championed women’s rights was facing allegations from women who said he had abused his power behind closed doors. His image as a moderate, pro-choice Republican was overwhelmed by a scandal that exposed the darker side of Washington’s old boys’ club.

Packwood’s downfall became one of the most dramatic political collapses of its time. A man who had spent decades building influence in the halls of Congress saw his career consumed by allegations that raised painful questions about power, privilege, and the women who said they were ignored for too long.

His death marks the end of a complicated and deeply controversial life in politics.

To supporters, Packwood may be remembered as a skilled lawmaker who broke with his party on key issues and helped shape Oregon’s future. To critics, his name will remain tied to the scandal that destroyed his career and exposed the hypocrisy of a powerful senator whose public image did not match the accusations made against him.

Either way, Bob Packwood leaves behind a legacy that is impossible to separate from the explosive scandal that brought him down.
