Jill Biden is pushing back hard after a dramatic passage in her new memoir sparked fresh chatter about one of the most tense moments in recent Democratic history: the day President Joe Biden ended his 2024 reelection campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly pressed for an immediate endorsement.
During a Washington, D.C., stop on the book tour for her memoir View From the East Wing, the former first lady defended her decision to walk out of the room while Harris was on the phone with Biden.
The moment has drawn attention because it offers a rare, emotional look behind the curtain at the chaotic hours after Biden’s stunning July 21, 2024, announcement that he would no longer seek a second term.
Journalist Paola Ramos pressed Jill Biden about the tone of the memoir, saying the writing seemed to grow “tense” when Harris entered the story.
Ramos asked whether Jill had questioned Harris’ loyalty to Biden, pointing to the passage where the former first lady describes leaving the room as Harris allegedly pushed the president to endorse her quickly.
“You walk out of the room because she wanted an immediate endorsement, and you storm out,” Ramos said.
Jill immediately corrected her.
“I didn’t say storm,” she fired back.
But she did not deny walking out. Instead, Jill said the moment was simply too emotional to sit through.
According to Jill, Biden had already made the painful decision to step aside after weeks of intense pressure from inside his own party. The family was reeling. Their children and grandchildren were calling. And at the same time, Biden was still carrying out the duties of the presidency.
Jill said her husband was in the next room working on the prisoner swap that would help secure the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich from Russia.
That contrast, she said, made the moment even harder to process.
“I’m looking at all of this happening, and I’m thinking to myself, my god, you know, here they’re saying Joe can’t do his job. He’s in the other room on the phone getting Evan Gershkovich’s release,” Jill said.
For Jill, the scene was not just political. It was personal.
She said she was watching a man who had devoted roughly five decades to public service being forced to end his career in a way she found devastating.
“So, I’m emotional,” she said. “I mean, I kept my composure. I’m not like crying or anything. And I’m watching all this unfold. I mean, I was so torn.”
Then came the call with Harris.
According to Jill’s memoir, Harris initially reacted with shock when Biden told her he was stepping aside, reportedly saying, “Oh my God, Joe. Are you sure?”
But Jill claims the conversation quickly shifted toward the endorsement.
Biden allegedly wanted to wait until the next morning before publicly backing Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris, according to Jill’s account, wanted it much sooner.
“I want it sooner,” Harris allegedly told him.
When Biden said he would call her after figuring things out, Harris reportedly pressed again, asking whether he could do it in “20 minutes.”
That was when Jill left the room.
“Of course, I walked out,” she said during the book event. “It was like too much. It was overwhelming.”
The former first lady said she was not angry as much as heartbroken.
“To me it was overwhelmingly sad for this man who had given his life 50 years of public service, and to end like this,” Jill said. “I mean, I was heartbroken. And that’s why I walked out.”
The passage has reignited debate over the extraordinary Democratic power shift that unfolded after Biden dropped out of the race. While Harris’ allies may view her urgency as a necessary move to stabilize the party and stop Donald Trump from gaining momentum, Jill’s account paints the moment as raw, painful and emotionally charged.
For Democrats, it was a historic handoff under brutal circumstances. For the Biden family, it was the crushing end of a political era.
And for Jill Biden, it was apparently too much to watch in silence.
