A trip to the “Most Magical Place on Earth” allegedly ended in handcuffs for one Disney World guest after a dinner dispute spiraled into a bizarre scene of flying water, broken glass, and a ripped-off cast member name tag.
Leslie Helen Varley, 57, of Massachusetts, was arrested May 19 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort after an incident inside Steakhouse 71, the fine dining restaurant located inside the hotel, according to an Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
Varley was booked on two counts of battery, robbery by snatching, and criminal mischief. She was later released on May 21 after posting three separate bonds totaling $5,500.
According to the affidavit, the trouble began when Varley arrived at Steakhouse 71 with a large party for an 8:30 p.m. reservation. She told police her group arrived around 8:15 p.m.
But restaurant staff reportedly told the group they could not all be seated together at one table because of the party’s size. That explanation allegedly did not go over well.
A female restaurant manager told investigators that Varley became upset and allegedly grabbed her by the shoulders, moving her approximately six steps. A male duty manager then stepped in to help with what the affidavit described as an “irate guest.”
That is when the situation allegedly got even messier.
Deputies say Varley threw three cups of water and ice at the male employee before standing up and ripping the name tag off his suit jacket. The affidavit says the name tag had been located on the left side of his jacket.
Varley then allegedly walked away from the restaurant with the name tag.
During the altercation, deputies say Varley also broke four glasses by dropping them to the floor, turning the upscale Disney dining dispute into a scene of shattered glass and chaos.
Neither employee was injured, according to police, and both declined medical treatment at the scene.
Varley gave investigators a different version of what sparked the confrontation. She allegedly claimed she became upset after a manager made a comment about her disabled daughter touching one of the cast members.
According to the affidavit, Varley admitted she grabbed a glass of water and threw it at the male employee, then threw two more glasses of water at him. The report also says one of the glasses broke on the floor.
Varley reportedly told police she took the manager’s name tag so she could photograph it and report him later. She acknowledged that the employee did not give her permission to take it, but claimed she returned it shortly after.
The incident ended with more than just criminal charges.
Varley was issued a trespass warning, and court records show she was told not to return to any Disney property.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort is one of Walt Disney World’s most recognizable hotels, located near Magic Kingdom and known for its monorail access, upscale dining, and prime views of the park. Steakhouse 71, where the alleged incident unfolded, is promoted as a signature dining experience at the resort.
PEOPLE reported that it reached out to Varley’s attorney and Disney World for comment.
For Disney guests hoping for a relaxing night out, the alleged meltdown was a stunning reminder that even at a luxury resort restaurant, a dinner reservation can take a shocking turn.
