Horror on I-95: Bus Slams Into Traffic Near Virginia Work Zone,

A deadly overnight crash on one of America’s busiest highways turned a Virginia work zone into a scene of chaos and devastation after a bus plowed into slowing traffic, killing five people and sending dozens more to hospitals.

The wreck happened around 2:35 a.m. Friday on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, according to Virginia State Police. Investigators said southbound traffic was slowing as drivers approached a work zone when the bus “failed to slow for traffic” and slammed into six vehicles.

All five people who died were inside vehicles struck by the bus, police said.

The crash left a horrifying trail of wreckage across the highway and raised urgent questions about driver responsibility, work zone safety, and whether enough is being done to protect motorists and road crews in high-risk areas.

In addition to the five fatalities, 34 people were taken to hospitals. Three of them were reported to be in critical condition.

Mary Washington Healthcare said 19 patients were taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. Five had been discharged, while two remained in critical condition. Another 12 patients were taken to Stafford Hospital, and all of them have since been discharged.

Officials described the crash as one of the most devastating scenes they had witnessed.

“I’ve got to say, this is one of the most tragic things I’ve ever seen,” Peyton Vogel, a Federal Transit Administration spokesperson who was at the scene, told the Associated Press. “Absolutely tragic.”

The National Transportation Safety Board announced Friday that it was sending a “go-team” to Virginia to conduct a safety investigation. That move signals the seriousness of the crash and the possibility that federal investigators will examine not only what happened in the moments before impact, but also broader safety issues involving the bus, the roadway conditions, and the work zone.

Virginia State Police said the investigation remains ongoing, but charges are pending. Authorities have not yet said who is expected to face charges.

The crash happened in an area where traffic was already slowing because of road work. Work zones are among the most dangerous stretches of highway, especially at night, when visibility is lower and drivers have less time to react to sudden backups.

The tragedy comes as the country continues to grapple with rising concerns over highway safety, distracted driving, fatigue, speeding, and the risks faced by workers and motorists in construction zones. For families traveling late at night, a routine drive can turn deadly in seconds when a large commercial vehicle fails to stop.

CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported that Virginia State Police later confirmed two additional crashes near the area of the original wreck, adding to the confusion and danger on the highway.

The names of the victims had not been released as of Friday afternoon.

For now, families are grieving, survivors are recovering, and investigators are trying to answer the central question: how did a bus barrel into traffic near a work zone with such deadly force?

The answers could determine whether this crash becomes another tragic headline — or a turning point in the push for tougher enforcement and stronger safety protections on America’s highways.
